Small shady town garden design that encloses the small space. Unusual artefacts provide highlights and planting is woodland in style. Making use of existing plants, I added shrubs, perennials, bulbs and ferns for year round planting interest.

W.D. Wells & Associates, Inc. https://www.facebook.com/wdwells.inc Project Entry: The Potager Garden at Stonebridge Mansion 2013 PLNA Awards for Landscape Excellence Winner Category: Theme Garden Award Level: Bronze Project Description: The Potager Garden at Stonebridge Mansion was completed as part ofthe Oxford Arts Alliance 2011Decorator's Showcase. The Garden is a fun and productive garden featuring culinary & medicinal herbs, vegetables, and sustainable gardening concepts. Many sustainable practices can be seen throughout the project such as a compost bin, a rain water harvesting system, and use of many native herbs and vegetables. A Potager is a French term for an ornamental vegetable garden or kitchen garden. We made sure to keep that in mind as we designed the space. By using a number of herbs that have both culinary and medicinal use we are trying to encourage the public to find more sustainable, home grown options for their own food and medicine. The project also features a vertical herbal wall which is a new idea taking shape in the industry. The wall allows you to provide herbs and vegetables with an optimum growing environment while saving an exorbitant amount of space. It gives people with limited space or poor growing conditions, such as people who live in cities an opportunity to grow their own herbs and vegetables. In addition to the herb wall, vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, beans, tomatoes, and many more can be seen throughout the garden. The garden is located adjacent to the kitchen of the residence to further enhance the garden to table idea. We hope that after seeing this fun themed garden people can both enjoy the space, but also try to apply many of the practices we show to their own landscape. We encouraged visitors to stroll through,or sit awhile in our garden, and learn about rain water harvesting, food crops, vertical gardening, and more! Not everyone wants a sea of grass for a front yard. This pocket garden provides a "living" room just steps away from the front door.

Fun fusion of desert style into a hip cocktail lounge and ramen bar in a beautiful British Columbia setting. We took an unconventional twist on patio decor by planting with perennials & mixing in house plants instead of the usual summer annuals used frequently here in Canada.

The arbor over the swing is intended to shade the sitting area in this hot yard as the sun comes from the left side of the swing. Evergreen Pandorea vines eventually grew over the top. The style mimicked that of the already existing pergola on the deck. The swing gives the family a resting place to watch people practicing on the putting green.

Even small spaces need great design. Container and small space gardens - decks, alcoves and patios are all great spots to "green" up with planted pots. Add color, texture and warmth to your small spaces - or drama to a large space - with a well-designed container. Birdbaths, fountains, troughs and more make great containers. Irrigation can be run to your containers or Oyas (water vessels) can be planted in the containers to provide irrigation and to keep your plants healthy.

Hot Lips Salvia blooms look more like those of snapdragons than the notable wands of its sister salvias. It gets its name from the white and red tips of it's blooms that look like "Hot Lips". In spring, its fiesta red blooms seem to fill the garden. In winter, Hot Lips' foliage also brings something distinctive to the garden. Its woodier stalks and delicate, deep green leaves create a dramatic backdrop for the silvery foliage of Salvia Clevelandii and cassia. Photo: Orly Olivier

This is a Roberto Burle Marx- inspired design, a drought tolerant landscape that imitates the vibrant colors and patterns of the tropics. We kept the monstera and bird of paradise plants, and with the colorful trim on the house, it all works together in this eclectic mashup.

Land2c Photo Exterior of chicken run and pots for herbs on new, graceful stairs. The old chicken coop and run was demolished and a new, custom coop and run were tucked under the deck. and stairs. Star Jasmine isplanted around the run-- not harmful to chickens. As it grows it will blend the run into the garden and create more shady areas for the chickens. Human access to the run is concealed as one of the frame squares. The frame will be painted to match the house trim color. Dark vinyl coated chicken wire was used to be less visually noticeable. The stair pots provide room for herbs to grow.
