yardscapes Inc.This Edina, MN project started when the client’s contacted me about their desire to create a family friendly entertaining space as well as a great place to entertain friends. The site amenities that were incorporated into the landscape design-build include a swimming pool, hot tub, outdoor dining space with grill/kitchen/bar combo, a mortared stone wood burning fireplace, and a pool house.
The house was built in 2015 and the rear yard was left essentially as a clean slate. Existing construction consisted of a covered screen porch with screens opening out to another covered space. Both were built with the floor constructed of composite decking (low lying deck, one step off to grade). The deck also wrapped over to doorways out of the kitchenette & dining room. This open amount of deck space allowed us to reconsider the furnishings for dining and how we could incorporate the bar and outdoor kitchen. We incorporated a self-contained spa within the deck to keep it closer to the house for winter use. It is surrounded by a raised masonry seating wall for “hiding” the spa and comfort for access. The deck was dis-assembled as needed to accommodate the masonry for the spa surround, bar, outdoor kitchen & re-built for a finished look as it attached back to the masonry.
The layout of the 20’x48’ swimming pool was determined in order to accommodate the custom pool house & rear/side yard setbacks. The client wanted to create ample space for chaise loungers & umbrellas as well as a nice seating space for the custom wood burning fireplace. Raised masonry walls are used to define these areas and give a sense of space. The pool house is constructed in line with the swimming pool on the deep/far end.
The swimming pool was installed with a concrete subdeck to allow for a custom stone coping on the pool edge. The patio material and coping are made out of 24”x36” Ardeo Limestone. 12”x24” Ardeo Limestone is used as veneer for the masonry items. The fireplace is a main focal point, so we decided to use a different veneer than the other masonry areas so it could stand out a bit more.
The clients have been enjoying all of the new additions to their dreamy coastal backyard. All of the elements flow together nicely and entertaining family and friends couldn’t be easier in this beautifully remodeled space.

Elemental Design GroupElemental Design Group had a big challenge in transforming an inaccessible hillside into a beautiful outdoor landscape. The garden includes terraces for an outdoor kitchen, spa deck, dining deck, swimming pool and fireside lounge.
The harmoniously integrated spaces are as beautiful by night with downlighting, up lighting, integrated hardscape lights and the warm glow of fire. Existing decks that were originally disconnected were redesigned to seamlessly flow down to the pool. The pool includes an elevated grade beam to hide the automatic cover, a sun shelf, fire pots, sheer descent water feature, glass tile accents, and color-changing pool lights. Powder coated laser-cut metal panels hide the undersides of the deck providing hidden storage and a dramatic backdrop for the pool area. Custom metal fencing surrounds the pool and upper decks, complimenting the Cor-Ten steel fire pit and retaining walls. Travertine coping and treads, with bluestone porcelain tile, and colorful plantings, are just some of the accents for this functional and luxurious family space.

Neptune Swimming PoolsThis fully tiled, patterned masterpiece features luxurious finishes and careful craftsmanship. The ‘knife style’ wet edge design is a more upscale and complex design and the perfect fit for this luxury home. Uncommon in most residential pools, this technique of water flow requires careful consideration, precision, and state of the art equipment. The water flows through the slot edge between the tile and the bluestone coping and is recycled back into the pool through the filtration system. The design exudes remarkable style and appeal.
Bisazza Glass Mosaic tiling featuring a black and white diamond pattern creates an eye-catching focal point and replicates a theme carried throughout the home. The marble water feature that sits adjacent to the wide entry steps, helps to balance out the different textures and by sitting at fence height creates a privacy screen to the neighboring property. Grouting proved a significant challenge for the team as white tiles had to be grouted white and black tiles grouted black, to prevent the colours mixing, all joins had to be individually taped and grouted.
The pool is also fully automated and self-cleaning to make maintenance very easy for the client.
Dig Your Garden Landscape DesignThe pool, hot tub, patio and landscape areas were dramatically updated and modernized for this Sleepy Hollow modern hillside home. The updates feature a beautiful blue pool tile and a modern concrete patio/pool surround. I designed the concrete patio with rectangular shapes that harmoniously integrate the pool coping, providing a continuous, contemporary detail extending to the pool's edges. To add some soft touches, we incorporated several narrow accent strips within the patio, and planted them with the ground cover Elfin Thyme.
A new planting bed edges the patio below the existing stone retaining wall filled with a variety of sculptural succulents, tall Kangaroo Paw plants and edged with polished black pebbles. The polished pebbles also surround the raised galvanized planters alongside the house and are used as a fire-resistant mulch in other areas. The hillside was updated with dramatic succulents and other architectural plants and ground covers, all with low water needs. This project was completed in the Spring of 2021.
