Maldonado Nursery & LandscapingWe took Texas native (adapted) plants and added a splash of elegance to give this front entry the luxury feel it deserves. We had to pick plants that would survive the brutal Texas heat as well as the hungriest whitetail deer in Texas.The deer were relentless and we had to use natural deterrents (plants that deer are supposed to hate) along with man made products (like deer netting).

These homeowners were looking for a comprehensive landscape plan for their newly completed custom home. They wanted an extensive driveway, a planting plan that would provide privacy in some key areas while accentuating the style of the home, as well as a pool, fire feature, hot tub, new stone entrances, and a play center on artificial turf. We provided a design that brought together all these items with a very specific colour palette which we repeated throughout different elements.

They wanted many colorful water wise plants, two streams, water falls, a pond, gravel paths, a flag stone patio over looking the pond, and a hidden zen courtyard showing the house and their bed room.

Mariani LandscapeA view through the garden rooms, a gravel path leads through to the many spaces, each set up to be viewed from within. The path is lined with cushwa brick outlining the spaces. Terra cotta containers are filled with boxwood and petunia; pachysandra and bugleweed ground cover fill the flanking and center beds. Overview: This garden project began with the demolition of an existing pool and decks cantilevered over a hillside. The garden was originally a Japanese-themed garden retreat and free-form shaped pool. While the client wanted to update and replace many elements, they sought to keep the free-form characteristics of the existing design and repurpose existing materials. BK Landscape Design created a new garden with revetment walls and steps to a succulent garden with salvaged boulders from the pool and pool coping. We built a colored concrete path to access a new wood trellis constructed on the center-line view from the master bedroom. A combination of Bay friendly, native and evergreen plantings were chosen for the planting palette. The overhaul of the yard included low-voltage lighting and minimal drainage. A new wood deck replaced the existing one at the entrance as well as a deck off of the master bedroom that was also constructed from repurposed materials. The style mimics the architectural detail of the mansard roof and simple horizontal wood siding of the house. After removing a juniper (as required by the San Rafael Fire Department within the Wildland-Urban interface) we designed and developed a full front-yard planting plan. All plants are Bay-Friendly, native, and irrigated with a more efficient in-line drip irrigation system to minimize water use. Low-voltage lighting and minimal drainage were also part of the overhaul of the front yard redesign.

Jay Sifford Garden DesignThis is a back courtyard of a previous project (VJ Project). I wanted some continuity between front and back spaces but I envisioned this as a contemporary farmhouse garden. The paver pad was pre-existing. I added the flagstone in a complementary color to add more useable space, to pull the eye out, and to give the pad a "reason" for being. I used aspaliered apple trees and Bloodgood maples to continue the farmhouse theme and to keep the eye moving from side to side in the space. Rusted iron spheres mimic farmhouse machinery. I used a granite millstone and planted masses of Mexican feather grass in two diagonal sections to break up the rectangular layout and to provide an illusion to wheat. Gray granite screenings are used as substrate to provide a logical bridge between the gray house siding and the pre-existing tan pavers. The clients' requirements were for more usable entertaining space, a space in which to relax after work, and for more shade.
