Looking at entries and door styles.
Could be nice to add some natural wood warmth beneath the entry roof
Looking at the use of horizontal wood walls on the interiors. This is one way of maintaining the warm character of wood, so often found in cottages, but in a more contemporary application.
We might also look to add warmth and texture by adding wood to ceilings.
If desired, I do think it is likely the ceilings could be vaulted in select areas, similar to what is shown in this photo. This photo also happens to show a living room that is sunken.

Looking at examples of 1/2 walls which also offer storage.

1/2 walls can be made of solid material, or glass, or traditional balustrade.

Looking at open concept kitchens with large islands.
Traditional style cabinets blend with modern tile. This approach could be one way to blend the cottage style that you like with the mid-century history of the house.
We might consider mixing in some accent cabinet pieces of natural wood as a nod to the mid-century house.
Looking at the use of barn/slider doors.
Starting with a couple of images to illustrate that there really are no rules. Antiques can be in the same room as mid-century pieces. Styles can be mixed!
