Storage!!!!! Storage storage storage. The pantry is part of the kitchen, not downstairs! Rachael and I have been talking about the pros of smaller kitchens -- you don't have to travel far when cooking. I could imagine a couple people working in a space like this. Blah on those lights though. Get that rug out of there, though. I would trip over that and die while trying to carry a pot of soup.
This is tiny, not enough functional space in view, and we're not wine people. But it looks nice. The stove is gargantuan but otherwise the feel is unassuming (I think I prefer the functional hoods with cabinets above over the giant dedicated ones). I don't think I like so many glass cabinets though. We're better served by having places to hide our messes as opposed to displaying things.
My new favorite. This is another one that seems really functional without being too garish. I like the simple bar stools. I love all that storage. Not sure about the high glass cabinets...I'd feel pressure to put nice things (that I don't own) in them. But the rest is very functional. Note the diagonal corner cabinets -- we have this now and I personally find it to be a really good use of space, there's lots of room in those corners. Also Rachael and I both agree those upside-down cup handles are the worst. Also... the stove in the middle with no range hood won't work, I burn things. A MAJOR complaint about our current home is not having a vent to the outside. That's gotta be corrected. This house currently vents into the attic... close but no cigar.
I'm not as into modern styles as I used to be, but I like this one. It's inviting and warm and there's a lot of functional space. I like the darker woods and the textures of the cabinets. Of course those pretty trees look nice too. A small thing I like is that the range hood isn't some kind of lofty eye-catching thing. It's just what you need and nothing more. I don't like the big honkin' hoods.
Rachael would hate this subway tile. I hate those hanging lights (bright filaments at eye level behind bonkable glass balls?). And I don't like open shelves (bleah dust). But I like the feel of this room nonetheless. Maybe it's the textured ceiling? Probably it's that exposed beam. I like the corner and love the access to the deck.
The layout here is nice. Not sold on the color scheme but the floors are warm. Lots of room to work, plus you get to be a part of the conversation if you're doing dishes. I really don't want there to be places for dust to hide in my kitchen though. Those spaces between the range hood and the cabinets? So gross!
This is the first one that I actually like. I'm not sure about the classical stylings, but I do like that it's not over the top. It's functional and not ostentatious. If the table were a bit bigger of an island and had storage it would be better. I really like those exposed beams. I generally dislike the hanging lights, but I think those are nice because they have a stiff stem instead of a chain or wire. (I always bump my head on these things, and then they swing for what feels like hours.) The recessed lights are a plus as well. I gravitate toward darker wood floors. This is nice because it's not super dark and has some warmth to it. And there's all that light because it's in a corner. My wife peeked and said she liked this one too. She doesn't like tile and pointed out that those plates over the stove have to go. I agree -- anything that adds extra cleaning time is O-U-T. Looking at it a day later... not as into it as before. It's a little stuffy.
