SCJ Studio Landscape ArchitectureOur client built a striking new home on the east slope of Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. To complement the clean lines of the facade we designed a simple, elegant landscape that sets off the home rather than competing with the bold architecture.
Soft grasses offer contrast to the natural stone veneer, perennials brighten the mood, and planters add a bit of whimsy to the arrival sequence. On either side of the main entry, roof runoff is dramatically routed down the face of the home in steel troughs to biofilter planters faced in stone.
Around the back of the home, a small “leftover” space was transformed into a cozy patio terrace with bluestone slabs and crushed granite underfoot. A view down into, or across the back patio area provides a serene foreground to the beautiful views to Lake Washington beyond.
Collaborating with Thielsen Architects provided the owners with a sold design team--working together with one voice to build their dream home.

Linsey Evans Garden DesignSmall rear garden in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Gabion cages filled with Purbeck stone were used for the retaining walls which create height and interest. The original pond with the Acer growing over the top was retained, raised slightly and re-lined with fibreglass. A circular path creates movement around the garden which is divided in half with the rear half being devoted to growing a vegetables.
A powder coated aluminium pergola adds sculptural dimension, height and interest.
The raised vegetable beds were created from Oak railway sleepers.
Many plants were retained and re-homed.

Nice PoziTransformation of a typical Wellington backyard from a bare grass slope to a low maintenance and very functional space. x3 retaining walls have been constructed to terrace the site out and maximize space on the sloped section. The owners are keen gardeners and now are delighted to have high yielding vegetable gardens that are accessible (also to elderly) Remaining gardens are planted out with New Zealand Natives and a native tree was successfully transplanted onsite. Pathways have been finished predominantly with compacted aggregate to keep cost down yet maintain a very solid and skid resistant surface. Paving stones have been laid under a re-positioned existing washing line which leads onto over-sized stairs up to an existing Gazebo. The main access to the house has been upgraded with a new staircase that spirals through the trees up to the street above with a single sided handrail.
