Help! My living room needs some "decor-therapy!"

I'm a busy mom of three little girls so my time has been very limited to dedicating any time to make my living room Warm and cozy but presentable. It's about 1000sq ft of living space and I'm desperately needing some ideas and guidance. I really need drapes and have been shopping but am afraid to commit to anything just yet. I love silk but with three children and a cat I'm not sure if that's the best route right now so I've been looking at faux drapes. I am thinking of having a cabinet built under our big screen to hide our electronics and such but not sure if I should do stained cherry wood to match our staircase or stick with white? Also, the couch with the red cover is not staying so I need to find another couch or chairs that are children friendly. Any help is appreciated with this huge living space! I'm ready to make this room a place that I love to rest and relax!

With such a large room I think you should look at visually dividing it into several areas, a sitting area near the TV, a play area for the children and you could even have an area for your exercise machine and use your plant to screen it. You could then still watch the children while you exercise. I would definitely have a good sized entertainment unit under the TV for storing toys, DVDs and any computer games your children have as well . I would also use ottomans for storage also and they are far more kid friendly than tables.

Because your space is so large, it is difficult to get a good perspective on it from photos and I agree with Carolyn's suggestion to have a designer in for an hour or two to give you ideas, help with layout and places to buy things. Arrange a time when you are child free to so you can give it your full attention.

Two hours spent with a local interior designer would be wonderfully helpful to you. Even one hour could do wonders. Treat yourself and your family to the lovely home that could so easily be yours! Please don't go out and buy new furniture without knowing what you're doing. The size and style of the furniture you buy are very important. The right furniture doesn't have to cost much more than the wrong furniture. The right furniture will make you comfortable in the room and comfortable in knowing that it looks great!

Buenas noches gestión estética! Muchas gracias por tus comentarios e ideas aportadas, la verdad es que estamos muy ilusionados con el proyecto pero también es cierto que es una reforma de cierta envergadura por nuestra intención de actualizar y hacer más cómoda la vivienda (en la actualidad no cuenta ni con ducha!) pero a la vez intentar mantener los elementos estéticos de la época que le confieren el encanto que tiene al piso. Agradecemos cualquier asesoramiento ya que las reformas las emprenderemos nosotros mismos, sin ningún arquitecto o interiorista que lidere el proyecto, contrataremos directamente a los profesionales que han de ejecutar la obra, por lo que nos surgen muchas dudas de la mejor opción estética / económica / práctica en diversos elementos. Adjunto otro elemento en el que no llegamos encontrar la opción ideal, hay 2 salas que están separadas también por la misma marquetería que en el dormitorio y unos armarios a ambos lados. Nos gustan estéticamente (no en ese color quizás) pero seria más practico que las 2 salas no estuvieran separadas (una estaría destinada a comedor y la otra a sala de estar), por los que nos planteamos o eliminarlo todo (con dolor en el corazón) o una opción intermedia como vaciar solo la parte central, o la parte central y uno de los laterales. ¿Consejo? Por privado (si se puede hacer esto aquí) podría enviar plano completo del piso y más dudas que tenemos! Gracias!

Due to a leak I need to repaint my kitchen, and surrounding walls which leads eventually to my living room . I need HELP to find a color that compliments my CREAM Kitchen cabinets and the living room color which is BERKSHIRE BEIGE. I think I want shade of white to brighten up my kitchen and family room and hopefully compliment the Berkshire Beige (BM paint color).

hi GESTION ESTETICA If you click 'edit' on the page I sent, it displays the distance in centimeters when editing the room dimensions. The closets and furniture shown in image 1 are exactly how my room is, both in dimensions and placement, right now. I plan to remodel it later, like in the second image or a different one that's more organized, as I see fit or as you may suggest.

Apologies: here's the second item - I am having a hard time with the Houzz app for some reason (once I began adding photos it was hard to further edit my post). Anyways, item #2: does anyone have any lighting ideas for this room? The easy solution is adding recessed lights (this kitchen is on the second floor and adding lights from above shouldn't be too hard with access from attic). I thought about adding maybe 3 or so pendant lights through the middle of the room (at short lengths) could be cool, but not sure how that would look/feel (Kohler Lighting 22653-PE01-BNL Artifacts 5" Wide Mini | Build.com) I think these would give off a strong amount of light (I have used similar lights from the same Kohler line in other rooms) but may seem odd in the space/not perform as well as recessed lights as far as illumination goes. I am going for somewhat of a traditional look, that has some craftsman/occasional Victorian vibes in my home. Any ideas welcome - thanks.

You idea book seems more traditional. Before you do anything, decide what you want to do in this room. Since it seems to be the hub of the home- I see toys, an exercise machine and the TV- make sure you can do all the things you love comfortably and yet achieve your goals. I would start with any area rug- this will define the seating area. I love your red sofa. I would get another sofa in a neutral fabric. This curved sofa is fun. What colors do you like? Teal could be really nice and give the room some pop.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I was thinking of tracking down a friend of our family who is an interior decorator in our area to help me...since I really need it! I really want to keep this my family room and move my treadmill to a different area of the house. Does anyone have a great site for drapery?

Anchor your seating area with a big rug. Bring your couches and chairs together, they seem very randomly spread out through the room. I think a cabinet below the tv is a must. :) By the way, I like the red couch!

What kind of drapes were you looking, besides kid and pet friendly? Something that lets the light in or something that is a true drape? West Elm has some nice ones- and many of them are machine washable. Pier 1 is also a good place for curtains. Pottery Barn is nice for drapes, but all will be dry clean only.

Kelly, I was actually shopping pottery barn for the drapes because I do think they have nice quality things for the home. I was also looking at half priced drapes and I ordered samples but haven't decided on any yet! I like the faux silk because they are lined twice since the drapes are more for my peace of mind at night. Our windows are so big I get a little nervous at night without them covered. So I guess not only will they dress up my living room they will just give me a little sense of security. At this point I guess I need to decide on color. I love the teal idea....and was thinking of yellow and teal in my sunroom so the same or a similar color scheme for my family room would work out great! My home is yellow on the outside and my sunroom is yellow. I have a Sherwin Williams color on my walls in my family room but can't think of what color it is.

Olldroo, I was actually thinking the same thing today after looking at my house magazines.. Of dividing the room into sections to break up the space into more intimate seating areas. I was thinking of getting two or three area rugs to help define the areas...I just need to decide on colors! Lol. As far as my treadmill goes I think I will move it since I don't need it in there anymore.
Thanks for all the input!! I appreciate everyone's thoughts and ideas. I have great taste In home furnishings but do not have the gift of visualizing and putting it all together myself :)

When you say faux silk, do you mean a polyester that has a silky finish? I have used that sort of fabric in my lounge room and I love the look of it - the finish is what is more important, not the actual fabric, and being able to just toss them into the washing machine is a bonus. I do understand your insecurity at night, it can get very spooky unless you have an outside light on. I love my windows covered anyway so I can totally control my privacy day and night as well as allowing the sun in in winter and keeping it out in summer.

Teal and yellow sound lovely and would create a very clean, fresh and happy room. Maybe you could reverse the colours and do teal, or a softer shade of it, on the walls in this room. As long as you use basically the same colours in the two rooms, everything will still flow.

I see drapery rods are already in place, but I wouldn't go that direction unless you need more privacy, or insulation. You have lovely woodwork around your windows which would be a shame to hide behind fabric. Your windows appear deep set, allowing for mounting shades inside. There are so many new cellular, pocket shades on the market now. If your windows are in standard sizes, readymades can easily be found & are super easy to mount yourself (saving $$!). They provide privacy & light control & when pushed up, nearly disappear, and also come in up/down versions that can be pulled up to the top, or pushed down to the bottom, or set anywhere inbetween. Your room appears large enough to create multi-use areas; a grouping directed at the TV in the center of the room and a separate 'quiet' grouping for reading or iPad surfing. The TV area would definitely benefit from a lower unit to house the various related electronics. It looks like you have plenty of space for something large which would also be a great place for growing kids games, DVDs, CDs, etc. You could create the feel of a sectional with the addition of matching chairs. Place the brown sofa directly across from the TV with a chair at each end of the sofa facing each other. Chairs that also swivel allow TV viewers to adjust their position to have best visibility from their 'side' viewing point, and would also allow them to be part of another furnishing grouping. Matching mid-size to large side tables placed at the corners of the sofa will anchor the seat grouping, creating a TV viewers 'island' which can also be a family style oasis. (We ALL enjoy our TV's, so why not embrace their existence in our decorating?) The tables will also allow for light sources to be brought into the room from a more comfortable height than direct overhead & create a cozy ambiance. A large mirror in a size appropriate frame place across from a window will bring the outside in and can also brighten dark corners. A collection of mirrors hung together is the avant-garde version of this idea. If you're into antiques, you can pick up lots of different mirrors at flea markets, garage sales, antique stores or even places like Target or Lowes. For continuity, take them all out of their frames, or leave them in place & tape/paper off the mirror & spray paint them all the same color, or all black, & hang them together to create an artistic composition on a wall. I wouldn't hang them across from the TV, unless you have something built around it that you also close the screen off with, the mirrors will reflect the thing you want to draw the least amount of attention to. A cool thing with the multi-mirror composition is it's something that can be as small or large as you like it & hunting for them is half the fun with friends and family members. Because you're not looking for anything precious or costly, kids can pick, and since you're painting all the frames to match, their finish or style doesn't really matter. An area rug can also work as an anchor for defining separate seating areas. Bookcases bring the eye up creating visual interests & weight in the upper sections of your room and help balance the weight of the seating furnishings and low tables.

Hi, what a lovely big room! And lots of windows which is an added bonus.

I would start off with rearranging your furniture right now before you purchase anything. This will give you a clear idea of how to zone it.
I'm assuming the main entry way is where you are standing? So this would be the first impression someone gets into room?

If so, I would immediately move the children's bookshelf to the opposite wall, next to little pink chair (cute!!) and move the chair back out of view too. I would then put the rocking chair(?) on left of pic into the 'play area' but turned so its facing the hidden corner and put thenplant next to it. This would zone the area and

Then I would arrange the two sofas into a more linear style rather than at an angle. It will look a little more 'designed' that way.

Alternatively you could set up the play area behind the red sofa, and remove treadmill (maybe even put it where the play area was, out of the way)
Having the play area there means it would be disguised behind the red sofa :)

Also, would you consider blinds instead of drapes? I feel they finish the room more than drapes which look almost half finished with exposed rod

I feel in order to warm the room up painting the walls might be better than adding coloured rugs and drapes... Sometimes having too many accessories can give a cluttered feel and stil make it feel like a big white box. Plus the high contrast of the white walls with the brown sofa can just make the sofa dominate the room

This way you could have natural blinds and sisal rugs and any colour sofa you wish.

P.s I prefer sisal rugs with tiled floors (if anything) as fluffy rugs seem to make the floor appear harder IMO - but that is just my opinion :)

If you tend to like darker furnishings, I'd stick to that as a plan and use darker tones, whether stains or paint colors, for any console under the TV, or bookcases. White would only tie into the existing woodwork, which there is already plenty of in this room and give it visual ownership of the space. Your room also seems to have a lot of open air space. Hanging tactile things like textiles warms up the air space & you could re-use your existing rods, just relocate them to where you'd want to hang the textile. Quilts, even rugs look great hung on the wall. You can get lovely or simple clips that grip the textile & just slide onto your rod for a quick & easy to change art option. Children's are can be gallery worthy if framed all alike & grouped together creating a larger composition. Your local custom picture framer can help with that, or you can find lots of do-it-yourself options with Pottery Barn, Michales, Pier One, Kohls, Target, etc. Just pick matching frames, with or without matting, or again, you can pick up frames on the cheap or for free from garage & tag sales (or often on trash day), clean them up & spray paint them to match. Old glass can be cleaned with window cleaner and scraped if necessary with a single edged razor blade. New glass can be cut cheaply at any hardware store, just take the frame in so they measure & cut it to fit THEIR dimensions. (As a custom picture framer, I rarely take the customers dimensions over the phone, but ask them to bring in their frame so I can be sure & cut it to fit exactly. Glass cut even slightly too small will slip out from the lip of the frame, or even slightly too large, won't fit at all.) One more truly avant-garde idea: it looks like a growing family is part of your ongoing decorating equation: you could do a mix of mirrors & children's, friends, family members artworks, grouped together for a wall composition & all frames painted to match, usually black or a dark color. The mirrors interspersed with the artworks allow the viewers and the room they reflect to become an intimate and changing part of the artistic creation. The wall arrangement is now more than the sum of its parts, but an interactive part of your family's life and equally as interesting as the TV wall it competes with.

Pat, Thank you for all the great ideas! The reason I have the drapery rods up without drapes on them is because my husband is gone on business quite often so he hung them before he left so all I have to do is put the drapes themselves up. It's more for privacy than nothing else right now....and the woodwork was an issue because it is a shame to hide our custom trim around all our windows but we were pressed for time and i just want to feel safe at night. We have the Icynene insulation in our home so the drapes wont help much for insulation. At this point the drapery rods have been there for about two months with nothing hanging from them! I haven't had a whole lot of spare time to dedicate to decorating my home since my three kids are home for the summer and my days revolve around them. It's frustrating for me because I look at my living room and think how grand it could be ...then i just get more frustrated since I have very little time left in my day to really make any changes. On the flip side of this, my husband and father in law are custom builders and the ones who built our addition to our home and I can have just about anything built inside my living room. I met with my father today to discuss building a nice big cabinet around the TV and bookshelves built from the floor to the ceiling on the two walls beside the French doors. Our windows are all custom sizes so I was thinking drapes not blinds for a quicker fix for privacy but now I'm wondering about the pricing for nice fabric drapery mounted on the inside of the windows instead. I think my husband would like the idea to keep the trim work showing since he built it all himself!
