“Robert Khazzam designed our rooftop garden in early 2014, and the installation was completed in fall of 2014. He did an amazing job and my wife and i have been absolutely thrilled with the result. We came to Robert with only some preliminary ideas of what we wanted out of the garden. He developed a beautiful design that absolutely transformed the rooftop. The design made great use of the existing space, using curved plant beds to separate the space into two different areas, but keeping a flowing, open feel to the entire roof. He was very receptive to our thoughts and suggestions as the design progressed, but added a number of features that we hadn't thought of and integrated all of these features into a unified design with a polished, professional look. Robert had a very deep knowledge of the plants that were included in the garden. He included plants that worked very well for the climate and location, and as a result the plants have absolutely thrived. He intentionally included different layers of plants that bloom at various times from the spring to fall, so we've been fascinated to see the garden constantly change as the seasons evolve. He also had a thorough understanding of the requirements for installing the garden, so that the installation went very smoothly and the finished garden matched the design perfectly. My wife and I had looked at options for finishing our roof for years, and we have often commented that we never thought it would turn out as well as it did. I would highly recommend Robert for designing a garden or outdoor space, and we're very grateful for the work he did for us.”

“Our first project with Esswein Associates entailed a total redesign and construction of our backyard and pool. The scope of this project was grand. It included gutting the existing pool and patio and building a new tile pool with bi level granite decking. The upper level of the decking is where a spa sits, spilling over into the pool. Behind that, Esswein built a custom Pavillion where we can enjoy the shade while still keeping our eyes on the pool. In addition to that, Esswein broke up the existing patio attached to the back of the house and designed and installed a much larger granite living space, complete with built in outdoor kitchen, bar area and pergola. To complete the project, the landscape of the entire 1 &1/4 acre of the backyard was redesigned and planted with large trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials. There was literally nothing that Esswein Associates did not plan for and execute in a professional manner to create our "more than we could have dreamed of" backyard living space. Mark Esswein and his team were here every day and were all very reliable, respectful and courteous. We lived here during this process, and it was a pleasure to have such a nice group of people here. Two years later, We hired them again. This time to reinvent our front acre, The scope consisted of enlarging our very long driveway, adding a "parking" area and redesigning and planting the entire front yard. With each project, Mark designed a beautiful, grand plan. With each project he delivered a beautiful ,grand plan. Mark is a pleasure to work with. So much so, that we look forward to each new season, when he and his crew come to plant our annuals and garden pots. We are happy to say we consider our relationship with Mark Esswein to be "for life."”

“We recently moved into a Brooklyn brownstone with nothing but a patch of dirt in the back yard, and after a few consultations with other companies we hired Brook Landscape to create a green backyard space. Having recently dealt with a slew of different contractors and experienced the usual contractor issues, we were definitely wary of yet another one. Here's how it went (short version: BROOK LANDSCAPE DOES INCREDIBLE WORK): SCOPE: 80' x 20' backyard. Leveled ground and installed substrate/foundation, flagstone and cedar decking, cedar steps, reclaimed slates for pathways; created multiple green areas with trees, shrubs and grasses, installed automatic irrigation system. DESIGN: We went through several iterations of Brook's original design, which we liked but wanted to fine-tune. Brook was very responsive to our needs/concerns, and tailored his design to our budget, while actually giving us more than we asked for (and surprising us with features we didn't even know we wanted). COST: Because Brook has done a lot of high profile design work, we were ready for a steeper quote, but the cost was well within our expectations for NYC (and lower than a number of other estimates); after the job was completed it felt like a bargain. EXECUTION: Flawless. The crews were knowledgeable, detail-oriented and conscientious to a fault; they showed up exactly when they said they would, from initial measurements with Brook's two architects, to final touch-ups by the carpentry and landscaping crews. They cleaned up every single day and in general performed like professionals who love what they do (big shout out to Brian L, Brian G, Scott and John for the amazing work). Job was completed ahead of schedule, and Brook did a post-completion walkthrough to check the work. We were thrilled overall with the results, and plan to hire Brook Landscape for Phase 2 of our backyard project early next spring.”
