“We hired MAK Design + Build to remodel our house and we can't speak highly enough of them. They are a small company, so they are very hands-on and accessible. They are thoughtful, creative, intelligent, perceptive and extremely hard-working. The design they developed was perfectly suited to our taste and our needs and the guys who did the construction were outstanding craftsman. The same guys worked at our house every day so we became very comfortable with them. For other crafts like tile, stone and paint, they use the same subcontractors for many jobs so they have good relationships with them and a lot of confidence in their skills. The project management was also great; consistent, attentive and accessible. The office staff was friendly, professional, helpful and available whenever we needed anything. The project ended two years ago, so we have had two years to review MAK's work. We literally don't have a single complaint about the process or the product. If there were 10 stars, that would be our rating.”

“My husband's grandfather is going to come live with us so we can give him more care as he ages. We hired Stephen to design a master bed/bath addition that has ADA-accessibility for Grandpa, as well as a kitchen & dining remodel on our small, ~925 sq ft, 2 bed, 1 bath 1935 cottage. We are still in the process of finalizing the design and are getting ready to hire a contractor for the project. Stephen has been great to work with so far. He is friendly, thorough, thoughtful and very creative. Throughout this long process of narrowing down what we want our house to be he has patiently and carefully listened to all our ideas, concerns and needs, given us great ideas of his own, answered all of our questions, and has incorporated everything we want into a ~1420 sq ft, 3 bed, 2.5 bath floor plan. We are looking forward to working with Stephen throughout this project and we are confident that with his help we will end up with a beautiful and comfortable, family friendly home.”

“Andy and Josh just completed a bathroom remodel for us. We are extremely happy with both the experience and the results. The new bathroom looks great and functions well. The budget and timetable were absolutely transparent. They were organized, efficient, skillful, and congenial. Throughout, they were mindful of the fact that we often work at home and kept mess and mayhem to a minimum. They solved the unexpected problems that invariably arise in a remodel creatively. They made excellent use of calls, email and texting to keep us informed about the schedule and any questions that arose. We are experienced home improvers and have hired lots of people to do lots of work for us in two states over twenty years. AJ Construction is the best firm we've worked with. Always remarkable is his ability to engineer a finished product that maintains the unique architectural elements which give the home a consistent feel and style. I have seen him take a home with historical value and reproduce trim details which have been unavailable for decades. Other contractors will often simply compromise the original style and create an addition which is contradictory to the homes roots. “We contacted Lauren Vaage after exploring an Ikea upgrade to our circa 1960s kitchen. We realized that trying to fit an Ikea “package” into our space was forcing mediocre materials into a less than optimal layout. We looked for help and based on the beautiful and creative work we saw on his web page we decided to contact Lauren. He helped us re-examine our goals for our home and to think more holistically about how we wanted to organize the kitchen so as to better integrate it with our outdoor space and our open plan living area. Lauren brought in experts to help us upgrade our HVAC and to plan for a future solar addition. Lauren’s vision and artistic approach to the project led to what seems in retrospect to a relatively simple solution that made our kitchen remodel into so much more. Lauren re-oriented our kitchen within the same space, adding a mere 27 additional square feet, but in so doing completely transformed our home, integrating the outdoor space with the kitchen and living area and allowing natural light to connect the spaces in a way that makes our home feel entirely new. Over the course of the project, we watched Lauren invest his time and attention to every step in the journey, turning the unexpected twists and turns of a remodel into added value. The team from Davis Artisan Builders were a pleasure to work with and are indeed true artisans (and great people) with years of experience who trust Lauren’s vision and take pride in the final product. It’s hard to imagine not having the kitchen that we now have, even though it’s completely different than our initial vision. It’s incredibly functional, with more space and storage than we ever could have achieved with a package remodel. More importantly, it’s transformed into a joyful space to live and cook in and we’re so grateful we took the time to get Lauren’s help in re-envisioning what would make our house into a better home.”
