1. There are no rules when it comes to color pairing. One of the biggest insights I gleaned from 2017 is that literally all colors can “go together” in the right context. To some, this idea might be counterintuitive or downright outrageous, but hear me out.I spent a lot of time in nature in 2017, and I’ve been deeply inspired by the way bright, hot and bold colors blend beautifully with more muted, pale and earthy tones.

In addition to the white paint and rugs, Van’t Hull used color and finishes to create cohesion and flow throughout the home. “Each room was bright and fresh, with classic fittings and materials, and each has an unexpected punch of color introduced with furnishings, rugs, artwork and accessories,” she says. Floral, gingham and striped prints lend freshened-up, preppy style.

Van’t Hull found a variety of these overdyed antique Turkish rugs in a rainbow of bold hues and used them in many of the rooms, giving the house a cohesive look. Also helping with the flow is the same white paint (Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace) on the walls, millwork and ceilings. “By using the same white paint everywhere, it allowed us to enlist pops of any color under the sun,” Van’t Hull says. All overdyed Turkish rugs in the home: Fay + Belle
Expansive French doors make the room feel more connected to the adjacent deck. Most of the accessories and furnishings were brought over from the main house. The color scheme is neutral, with pops of color in designated areas. The living area is furnished with a flat-screen TV, a gray sofa, an accent chair and built-ins for storage. “If someone is watching TV alone, he or she will wear wireless headphones so the other person isn’t disturbed,” McDonald says. The outdoor patio sits under a 42-foot-long steel cover that runs the length of the house. The Ikea sectional is “not a typical outdoor sofa, but it’s covered in heavy canvas that wears well with people getting out of the pool wet,” Leyla says. She bought the coffee table on clearance and used leftover quartz from her kitchen countertops for the top. The dining table is two prefab picnic tables that her husband rebuilt. “He took the benches off and spaced them 5 feet apart, then put 15-foot planks down for across the top and for the bench seats,” she says. The couple can seat 15 to 20 for dinner here and hosted this past Thanksgiving, with the help of outdoor heaters spaced around the table.Browse more homes by style: Apartments | Barn Homes | Colorful Homes | Contemporary Homes | Eclectic Homes | Farmhouses | Floating Homes | Guesthouses | Homes Around the World | Lofts | Midcentury Homes | Modern Homes | Ranch Homes | Small Homes | Townhouses | Traditional Homes | Transitional Homes | Vacation Homes
The playroom was formerly a third bedroom with large double doors that swung into the room. Leyla replaced the two doors with one 48-inch pocket door on the left to free up space. The couple also changed the French doors to the right from 48 to 60 inches and made sure they swung out to open. The storage unit is a combination of Ikea media cabinet installed above three Ikea toy boxes. Rug: Jaipur
Bensen reversed the black and white the couple loves in their office, with black paint on the walls and white accents. “Amy wanted a really dramatic art wall, not just a few pieces,” she says. The designer presented her clients with a to-scale computer rendering of the gallery wall, specifying where to put the pieces they had and others that they were considering purchasing, and filling in with her own suggestions to round out the collection. Using white mats and black and white frames gave the wall the super-graphic look her clients love. “The key to a gallery wall like this is to really just start somewhere, stick with pieces that are in the same size range, and build out from there,” the designer says. Bensen chose a dark butcher block from Ikea for the desktop and used two Alex drawer storage units from Ikea for the base, which add more contrast to the dark walls. A Turkish-inspired rug and the leather desk chair offer texture and color. “Amy showed me some inspiration images where the black wall really made a colorful rug pop. We all loved the rug in the living room and the idea of contrasting another rug like that with the dark walls in the office,” Bensen says. Graphite wal...
Just about everything else in the room is custom. The coffee table is from Design Republic, and the ottomans are upholstered in a gray pinstripe menswear fabric. They provide extra seating when the close-knit family has relatives over. The pieces of art above the sofa are stylized portraits of the four family members, mounted on canvas and covered in a thick coat of resin for a glossy effect.
The family room is the more casual hangout space. “This is where the kids are allowed,” Briceland jokes. During the design process, he pre-configures his rooms using 3D software to convey his ideas visually to his clients. The process helped them decide to go dark with the ceiling.“Painting it dark makes the ceiling look even taller” than its 12-foot height, Briceland says. The dramatic navy satin draperies enhance the feeling. The branching light fixture from Elite Living adds a dose of drama.
Briceland used a computer program to create the black-and-gold artwork behind the sofa and printed his own fabric for the backs of the side chairs and the bright red-orange bench by the window. The black-and-white rug is another of his custom designs and was fabricated by Weaver & Loom. “We’re big on elements of the unexpected, clash of colors and patterns, and showpieces,” Briceland says. He always tells his clients not to “limit or censor” themselves. “If zombies or superheroes are your thing, we know how to make that work in your home and keep it sophisticated.” Browse black-and-white rugs
Perfect some polish. Black lacquered surfaces are often a good base from which to create a glamorous scene. A black-and-white photo of a glamorous Hollywood icon continues the theme. Other key glamour signifiers here include the string of pearls, the silver boxes and that classic boutique hotel favorite, a short-stem white-rose arrangement. A strict color palette will also help you achieve the look — here it’s monochrome, but you could go all white, white and gold or shades of gray, or all neutrals. Just be sure to keep the colors subdued.
By mixing pastels with bright shades, you can make a living room feel calm, comfortable and soothing, as well as fresh and energizing. In this case, pink and yellow accents pep up a gray-and-white room.
