. Plumbing Residential plumbing typically uses 1½-inch pipes for drains. You’d be surprised how much gunk and hair goes down that drain. The larger the drain, the less likely it is to clog. The cost difference to upgrade to a 2-inch drain is practically negligible, and unless your framing doesn’t allow for it, you should consider increasing the drain in your shower to 2 inches. Also, If you live in a region where temperatures drop below freezing during the winter, it’s important that your water supply lines don’t get routed through an exterior wall.
Slipper Satin by Farrow & Ball “Slipper Satin worked perfectly in this room because the windows faced north, and the light was a little cold,” says interior designer Kirsten Kaplan, who designs in the Middle Atlantic region. “So we warmed it up, and now it’s inviting even on the grayest days.” Your turn: Do you have a favorite off-white paint? Please share it with us and tell us why you love it in the Comments.
Gray. A popular color for modern and transitional interiors, gray is a unique neutral. I love a soft charcoal gray paired with creamy whites and beige. Try gray with a punch of chartreuse for a surprising combination that really works. This dramatic great room is painted in Dunn-Edwards' Baby Seal DE 6361.
Beige. A basic beige is a must-have for my paint arsenal. I love beige all through the house punctuated with bold color and other neutrals. Loved for its versatility, beige is also a great choice as a backdrop for an art collection. This elegant entry is painted in Sherwin-Williams' Accessible Beige SW7036.
The recommended height to hang a pendant above a table is 28 to 32 inches, but the fixture can be hung slightly higher or lower depending on personal preference, fixture size and ceiling height. Address whether or not the fixture is to provide task or ambient light (or both) and select a fixture which meets the lighting needs of the location to be hung. A large drum pendant hung over a table not only anchors the vignette, but if placed on a dimmer the fixture can provide brighter light for any tasks done at the table and softer light while dining.

textures 4. Texture. A rich variety of physical and visual textures takes a room from OK to truly engaging. Here, texture makes a simple color palette look beautiful. An easy way to add texture is to introduce a piece that includes wood, another that includes metal and another that includes glass. For a truly designer look, find places to include as many of these materials as you can: leather, paper (books or art), plush fabrics, mirrored surfaces, tufting, lacquer, basketweave, sheers, ceramics, concrete and textural patterns (like the nebulous rug shown here).
lighting 3. Layered lighting. It cannot be stressed enough: Lighting should come from more than one source in any room. Those well-spaced recessed lights won’t be enough to eliminate the shadowing that inevitably harshens a room. Try to include task lights or spotlights, hanging lights, and table or floor lamps to get light from different directions. An extra advantage is that you can go full bright (as in this photo), then turn off a few lights for a more dim and moody atmosphere in the evening.
rug size 2. Large area rugs. Even when you have beautiful floors, an area rug makes a perfect anchor to a seating area for that layered, photo-shoot-ready look — but only if the rug is large enough. If it merely floats between the seating pieces instead of tucking fully under, it’s usually better to go without one.

If you are on a tight budget, have big windows to dress and want an informal, casual look then vintage linen sheets can often work really well. For a simple look, fold over and stitch along the top so that you make a funnel, ready for a curtain pole to be inserted. Depending on the finished length, this can be quite deep, which gives a luxurious look to the finished curtains . French linen sheets often come with the same colour embroidery and look great puddled on the floor, as the length is often around 2.5 metres. Linen also dyes really well too. They also have the advantage of being machine washable. I recently bought 2 pairs of embroidered sheets for 100 euros in a French market and the curtains I plan to make for our new house will look perfect! ( I have used this trick before to stunning effect)

hardware From a functional standpoint, some cabinets are better suited to certain types of hardware than others. For example, the kitchen shown here has round knobs for swinging doors, bin pulls for pullout drawers, a small handle for a flip-up door over the drink station and large handles for the paneled fridge. No single one of these hardware options would be the ideal ergonomic choice for every application, so mixing them just makes practical sense.
hardware mix and match Hi Ms. Rutter, It needs to be within two years or a doctor can sign off that you aren’t recommended for testing at this time (this note must be within the past two years as well). 5. A Window in the Shower This is a great feature if done properly. Some things to consider: Choose a frosted-glass panel for privacy and preferably one that opens for fresh air. Next, ensure that there are stone jambs along the entire installation so that this area is watertight. Also, ensure that the sill gets sloped down and away for proper drainage. Lastly, I always specify a tilt-and-turn window in a shower, because the screen is located on the outside of the window; the handles are plastic, so they won’t rust; and the window provides full privacy even when tilted open.
