The material we used on these paths is eastern white pine duff--otherwise known as pine needles. Depending on where you live, you could source pine needles from whatever local pine tree species are near you. I have seen many gardens mulched with southern yellow pine, and I personally prefer the white pine because it is softer... The only issue is that it is tough to purchase. You almost need to have a local source.

The bench is on a small flagstone patio that is dry set. The path is small bark chips and it does get debris in it every season due to the large native trees, so the bark needs refreshing every once in a while.
