Add a vibrant flash This is such a small decorating trick, but one that will add immediate impact to your staircase with very little effort. By outlining skirting boards with a ribbon of vivid colour (this one offsets sophisticated Grey Teal with a slash of Marigold, both by Little Greene) our eyes are magically drawn upwards to the next level. Picking a brave, contrasting colour will instantly propel a period staircase, packed with original features, into the 21st century, for a fabulous fusion of old and new.

Give stairs some flair Adding a 3D wall panel can be a shortcut to creating interest beside a staircase. Dark grey walls have been in vogue for a while, but adding a textured panel in this shade moves the trend on nicely here. The subtle pattern adds drama without being over the top, and means there’s no need for busy artworks to lift the area.

Let in light between the stairs Open stair treads and glass balustrades, as shown here, allow light from the entrance hall and landing windows to travel right into the centre of your home. They can also create attractive shadows and strips of light across the walls and floor.
It’s essential to have an open mind Talk to your designer about different lighting approaches; there’s so much more you can do than carpet bomb a space with downlights. This glazed dining room is a great example. A space like this forces the designer to look at alternative locations to fix the lighting, as most of the space is glass. Custom brackets allow the suspended lighting strip to create intimate dining light, while floor-recessed, colour-changing uplights provide a different perspective, framing the windows and doors.
