What do you like about this photo? The stair guardrails are an inversion of the exterior. Instead of solid panels with circles cut out of them, they are solid circles welded together; the voids are the spaces between circles. These pieces are actually the waste of the exterior screens, but where the design of the exterior was controlled by the architects through the use of technology, Monti just gave the metal fabricator some rules for placing the circles. The result is a hybrid of contemporary technology and traditional craftsmanship. I like being able to see the welds.
What do you like about this photo?Linda Burnside came up with a cool solution for this built-in cabinet. She added an outlet to the wall, then used a pigtail cord that runs through the unit and into this drawer for charging phones and iPads. If you already have an outlet located behind a cabinet like this, setting this up would cost about $50. Hiring an electrician to install an outlet might run another $100.

Get an overstuffed couch and thick carpeting or matting beneath the carpet. “The less minimalist style the better,” Emmi says. “If you walk into a room that looks like it’s going to sound good, it probably will.
