The design was also an attempt to put solar features at the service of the occupants and of the overall architectural design impulse. Researching the few Trombe wall houses in the U.S., we discovered that there was no access to the interior of the glazed wall for cleaning or maintenance purposes. In this design, the space between glass and mass is enlarged to become in effect a narrow two story greenhouse, where steel grate catwalks can support plants and provide access for maintenance, operation of the vents, and visual drama when one enters. Thermostatically controlled exhaust fans allow the occupants to control the temperature in that four foot buffer zone.
