Built in 1894, this historic Stick-style house in Cambridge, Mass. was originally part of an expansive estate owned by Gardiner Greene Hubbard, a lawyer who became the first president of National Geographic Magazine. His daughter married Alexander Graham Bell in the garden. Woodrow Wilson’s daughter later owned the house. Meyer & Meyer was commissioned by the new homeowners to better accommodate their active young family. The whole-house renovation included demolition of a small kitchen and its replacement with a gable-ended addition housing a new French-inspired SieMatic kitchen. The original paneling and woodwork was restored to its original state, filled in where missing, and complemented with new paint colors and hand-painted wall coverings and furniture. The project scope involved conversion of an upstairs office into a master bedroom-bathroom suite, renovation of all bathrooms, enhanced closet space, and an excavation below the house to create a new family room and guest suite with 10-foot-high ceilings.

While the formal dining room takes on a different feeling than the living space, it maintains the same sense of curated detail. Jennifer goes on to explain, "When I decorate my home I don't feel I have a style. I believe what ever you put in your home is what you should love, and that way it creates its own style ... I've been collecting for so long that a lot of my treasures have come together because I love them and eventually it will all make sense. I don't like one 'way'; that's why all my rooms are different."
The dining table was found in an old flower shop. Originally it was a worktable with very tall legs, so Raymond and Jennifer cut them down to modify it for its current use. The chairs received Jennifer's creative touch as well. Purchased at a garage sale for $1 each, they are originally from an ice cream parlor in the basement of the historical Higbee's Company department store. Once she got them home, Jennifer reupholstered them with a cow-hide rug that she was no longer using.

The design concept for this project is “Vintage Modern,” meaning the space has the visual charm and appeal of a vintage cottage, but with technologically advanced and sustainable surfaces, modern appliances, and more efficient use of space.
This gallery of images shows the Interior Architectural Design, Interior Design and Kitchen and Bath remodel of home in La Jolla, CA. La Jolla is an upscale coastal region of San Diego known for its undulating hillsides, cool Mediterranean climate, and mixed architectural styles ranging from multi-million dollar ultra-modern homes to original turn of the century bungalows.
This picturesque Victorian home has elements of Tudor style architecture and from the moment you walk through the gate, the residence is overflowing with charm. A cobblestone path leads you to a two story central turret complete with its original arched Douglas Fir door, lion knocker and a quaint pointed slate roof. The turret, sitting at the intersection of the L-shaped footprint of the home, adds a unique curvilinear feature to the exterior and interior architecture. From the other side of the property, just blocks from the ocean, cool Pacific Ocean breezes flow through a colorful garden patio adjacent to the kitchen.

Tucked neatly into an existing bay of the barn, the open kitchen is a comfortable hub of the home. Rather than create a solid division between the kitchen and the children's TV area, Franklin finished only the lower portion of the post-and-beam supports.
The ladder is one of the original features of the barn that Franklin could not imagine ever removing. Cleverly integrated into the support post, its original function allowed workers to climb above large haystacks and pick and toss hay down a chute to the feeding area below. Franklin's children, 10 and 14, also enjoy this aspect of their home. "The kids and their friends run, slide, climb up the ladder and have a ton of fun," he explains, "It’s a barn! It is a place to share with friends and family."

This stately Georgian home in West Newton Hill, Massachusetts was originally built in 1917 for John W. Weeks, a Boston financier who went on to become a U.S. Senator and U.S. Secretary of War. The home’s original architectural details include an elaborate 15-inch deep dentil soffit at the eaves, decorative leaded glass windows, custom marble windowsills, and a beautiful Monson slate roof. Although the owners loved the character of the original home, its formal layout did not suit the family’s lifestyle. The owners charged Meyer & Meyer with complete renovation of the home’s interior, including the design of two sympathetic additions. The first includes an office on the first floor with master bath above. The second and larger addition houses a family room, playroom, mudroom, and a three-car garage off of a new side entry.

Embracing the vintage, and her love for Shabby Chic style, this coastal beach client wanted to retain her original stove, as well as her original kitchen cabinets. We also kept all her vintage china and old appliances. We removed the old tile counter and backsplash, and replaced them with a butcherblock countertop from IKEA, and beadboard backsplash. The farmhouse sink and bridge faucet and vintage style chandelier were also purchased for the new space. Since my client doesn't use the old stove very often, she opted for no hood above the stove. The breakfast nook is quite tiny yet still suitable for morning breakfasts for two.
