Hopewell Junction Farmhouse

Photo by Chris Davis Cina This room immediately became a favorite of the family when they moved in a few years ago, as it serves as their "last stop" before heading to bed after a long day working outdoors. The clients "wind down" in here. It is also a place for the generations of this family to gather to laugh, watch television or cozy up by the fire. We decided to leave warm knotty pine paneling that adds a much needed verticality to the space, which has low ceilings. The client also loved the original wide plank floors. The space gets wonderful afternoon and evening light which gets an extra punch with the yellow hue we chose for the walls and the white for the ceiling. Given the size of the room, we were challenged by the client's desire to provide ample seating. A properly scaled sectional from local furniture store, Millspaugh Furniture, with a low back and tailored contour was the perfect choice. The sage chenille stock fabric has flecks of our accent colors in it. Custom pillows by Michael W. Shely in fabrics by Carlton V. and Pollack add contrast. We started the custom soft roman shades, also by Michael W. Shely and in a Carlton V. stylized floral linen blend, up at the ceiling so to bring your eye up in the low space. This also allowed us to keep the windows as uncovered as possible, as the client loves the natural light. To work with the colonial farmhouse style of the house, the client requested traditional handmade rug, so we selected from Millspaugh a braided rug in a more updated rectangular shape as opposed to the traditional oval. The tufted leather cocktail ottoman adds to the comfort of the space. Antique brass candelabra sconces from Summer Hill Ltd. on a dimmer were added above the fireplace for accent lighting and to draw focus on the client's own antique mirror. A gustom glazed urn lamp by Stephen Gerould sits atop the client's own repurposed end table. The client's own book cabinet, bench and rocking chair were placed in the room as well, as was an old reading lamp. The client wanted their fern botanicals framed and showcased in the room, so we grouped them above the sofa flanked by the two gorgeous windows. Nature, Flowers and Greenery are a passion for the client and they wanted such motifs to be reflected and celebrated in the design of this space. Seasonal fresh flowers were arranged by the client in found vessels and antique pitchers from her own collection and placed around the room. Overall, casual comfort prevails in this warm, sunny space in a Farmhouse in Upstate New York.
