Landscape LogicThis is the lounge fire pit area which will get a lot of use by both the kids and the adults. The flooring is made up of Belgard Mega Arbel pavers with a rectangular paver border. The boulders are natural and flank the seating area.
UserAs you can see, the bamboo also provided privacy between residents on the atrium level. This was a giant running bamboo, and although very desirable for containers, it has to be monitored very carefully in the open landscape. It can easily eat an acre or two. FormLA LandscapingAs they grow, fruit trees at the driveway's edge enhance the privacy provided by the neighbor's hedge. They are fed by a graywater system that reclaims water from the laundry. Their location makes it easy for the on-the-go family to take a snack for the road or to offer fruit to passersby.
Northwest Native Landscapes LLCRainwater is celebrated as the focal point in this backyard garden. The angled deck provides enough space for a morning coffee, then transitions down onto a natural stone patio for large gatherings. A deep plant bed was created against the garage to showcase plant textures and soften the patio space. The curved edge of the patio mimics the irregular shape of the corner rain garden, with a gently sloping lawn in between the two spaces. Natural boulders form the edge of the rain garden, while swaths of rushes and other water-loving plants provide all season interest.

Harmony Design NorthwestBoxwoods border the front walkway, entry, patios, and driveway, forming a low hedge. The red clay brick pavers in a herringbone pattern add a timeless appeal to the house.
Small garden beds feature white-blooming favorites like Hydrangea arborescens Annabelle’, Gardenia jasminoides ‘Kleim’s Hardy,’ and Liriope muscari ‘Monroe’s White.’ For privacy, Buxus sempervirens ‘Skywalker’ was chosen for hedging.

Urban Oasis Landscape DesignThe uneven back yard was graded into ¬upper and lower levels with an industrial style, concrete wall. Linear pavers lead the garden stroller from place to place alongside a rain garden filled with swaying grasses that spans the side yard and culminates at a gracefully arching pomegranate tree, branches laden with impossibly red blossoms and fruit.
Northwest Native Landscapes LLCDramatic plant textures, modern hardscaping and sharp angles enhanced this mid-century modern bungalow. Soft plants were chosen to contrast with the sharp angles of the pathways and hard edges of the MCM home, while providing all-season interest. Horizontal privacy screens wrap the front porch and create intimate garden spaces – some visible only from the street and some visible only from inside the home. The front yard is relatively small in size, but full of colorful texture.
FormLA LandscapingLong before the riparian-loving, drought tolerant California native foliage established itself, this rain garden worked to keep stormwater onsite. It takes quite a bit of technology to do so. The bioswale accepts water from the back and front gardens as well as the roof of the home via drains, an underground vessel, and a sump-pump. It can absorb this level of water in a matter of minutes. Because the soil in this area tends toward clay, another drain helps manage possible overflow. Photo: Steve Matloff, 2018
Urban Oasis Landscape DesignSculptural agaves, succulents and California native plants punctuate the front landscape complementing the “arroyo seco” rain garden studded with boulders and branches. The rain garden catches 50% of the stormwater runoff from the roof and infiltrates it into the soil. The remaining 50% of the runoff goes to a second rain garden in the back yard.
