Salt + Dirt | Outside DesignDespite the unexpected, hefty cost, all the trees were selectively hand pruned by reputable arborists. Thinning and opening up canopies is not only reinvigorating, but reveals a venerable tree's true nature and form. To protect soils, the arborists used "spider lift" bucket truck.
The design in this part of the property is super curvilinear, emphasizing this stunning cottonwood, echoing the flow of the nature and river around it.

Salt + Dirt | Outside DesignBecause this property is a rural, riverside acreage, the plantings were designed to naturalize themselves.
Grasses are the "hair of the planet," wrote Oehme & Van Sweden in their iconic "Bold and Romantic Gardens." Grasses will be the first to take over a garden. This property is designed towards this reality. A few intentional ornamental grasses set up design rhythms and repetition just for that eventuality. When - not if - it happens, the grounds won't look weedy and overgrown between maintenance visits.
The other plantings are a melange of opportunistic yet complimentary species, with a focus on foliage: Engleman ivy, Corsican violets, golden currant, columbines.
Using native shrubs and forbs such as these ascribe to the reality of volunteer plants. Birds will spread them far and wide, so why not start there? What else evokes Colorado as well as the plants that thrive here?
Banker WireA private homeowner, who is also a professional architect, wanted a low-maintenance fencing system that wouldn't rot or need painting every few years. They also wanted to use architecturally attractive materials that were durable to match their mid-century modern style home. The fencing fabric was also very important to be balanced visually with the beautiful forestry around their house. The powder-coated WDZ-545 welded wire mesh was the solution they were looking for. This ornamental welded wire mesh creates a stylish pattern to enhance the landscaping of the home, while providing a safe and functional barrier.

Linear pavers lead the garden stroller from place to place alongside a rain garden filled with swaying grasses that spans the side yard and culminates at a gracefully arching pomegranate tree, branches laden with impossibly red blossoms and fruit.
Urban Oasis Landscape DesignWe began by removing the patchwork of “updates” that left a confusing pastiche. At the front of the house, we removed a late addition window and veneer stonework. Starting over now with a clean slate, we chose a color palette of rich charcoal and warm coral-orange. Over the new smooth stucco finish, we built two custom vertical screens with natural cedar to break up the expanse of the front walls and replaced the dated garage door with a stunning cedar door. New concrete planters hold an exotic collection of cactii at the entrance.

Where once this was an inhospitable desert, the garden now it has a multitude of tranquil destinations to enjoy, serenaded by the calls of birds that have made their home there.

The elements of a sustainable habitat garden have been designed into the ¬lush landscape. One hundred percent of rainwater runoff is diverted into the two large rain gardens which infiltrate stormwater runoff into the soil. After building up the soil with tons of organic amendments, we added permeable hardscape elements, a water feature, native and climate appropriate plants - including an exceedingly low-water Kurapia lawn - and drip irrigation with a smart timer. With these practices we’ve created a sumptuous wildlife habitat that has become a haven for migratory birds & butterflies.
