Extension, Corstorphine
The new garden room is of contemporary design and aims to be in keeping with the scale and materials of the surrounding context. A single storey timber ‘box’ wraps around the walls of the existing house. A taller, flat roofed volume is set back from the perimeter of the timber box in order to mediate between the tall ceilings of the existing house and the lower garden room: a large rooflight brings daylight in to the heart of the plan. Stepping down the roof keeps the timber box lower, minimising the impact of the extension.
Horizontal Scottish larch cladding is proposed for the extension which will turn silver over time as it weathers. The roof is to be grey single ply membrane with a green roof installed at the upper level. Rainwater downpipes will be dark grey aluminium. Door and window frames within the new construction will be dark grey aluminium. The taller roof volume is to be white render to match the existing main house and the plinth and terraced area to the garden will also be white render with timber steps and benching.
