*very* bespoke under stair storage

Hi everyone,

We have an open space under our staircase in our dining room. The dining room is open plan with the kitchen and living room. There's another door from the hallway which we've currently blocked off.

There is 0 storage anywhere in the house (72m2 in total) and we've rigged a temporary under-stairs storage solution which needs to house - shoes, seasonal coats, bags in regular use, and the dog's stuff. This is a massive improvement from our previous "pile everything on the dog's crate" solution and cost maybe £30 in total but is obviously lacking - we still have nowhere to put our hoover, mops etc., and it's right in the middle of our beautiful living area.

How can we make this more efficient and beautiful? A properly built in solution would have to work around the dog's crate which seems like it would be so bespoke that it would detract from the appeal of the house.

We've considered hanging a nice floaty linen curtain with some fairy lights, hanging plants etc. Would this look good or naff? And how might it work with the sloping ceiling?

What else could we be looking into?

Our budget is approx 1 shoestring but we would invest in the perfect solution

“Our budget is approximately one shoestring” 😂😂😂 Love it.

Understairs storage is very popular at the moment. Ask a carpenter for a quote in MDF and then be prepared to paint it yourself for the most cost effective way.

The simplest solution is to put doors on the area. I would put the dog crate elsewhere as that is making it difficult to find solutions. Do you need a dog crate - is it a puppy? Stuff that can be seen never looks tidy. Is there someone in your household who can use a saw and attach some hinges? You could make MDF or wooden flat fronted doors which can be painted white. Even getting a carpenter to make the doors shouldn’t cost a fortune, but obviously a bit more than a shoestring. The curtain could work short term but I’m not sure about the lights. You don’t really want to draw the eye there. Here’s a couple of flat fronted door ideas, one painted and the other natural.

Funnily enough I'm reading your post whilst at son's house as hubby and son are installing their solution to their understairs storage. Wouldn't work for yours as opening in a different place. I agree with Sonia and Daisy, both good solutions. Presumably dog crate will not be needed for more than a few months (based on son's experience) so I'd put doors on and put crate in front until no longer required. If you plan to use crate long term then build in a nook for it without a door. Google puppy nook to get the idea. Temporarily you could use a mobile screen to hide the "clutter".

Here's an idea to incorporate pet space under the stairs.

Echo what others have suggested with built-in cupboards. If you’re handy, grab some 2x2 and plywood or MDF sheets and knock them up yourself.

It does look like that Sonia! But having a dog space under the stairs is good use of space. Usually no need for a cage once they’re beyond puppy stage, then their bed can go in the space for them to retreat to when they need some down time. I’d not want to keep the dog in such a small gated space for long.

We have filled triangular spaces in the past by using "Elfa" storage towers, here are a couple of examples...

Its a very cost effective system that can be trimmed to fit as close as possible under the stair angle.

On 11th May, Jude Tugman wrote an interesting article entitled:

Expert ways to integrate your dog’s bed into your home

Do have a look at it as some of the photos show quite inventive ways of making the most of the space underneath stairs.
