Want to add some character to my large wall

TommyG
hace 3 años

Hi, I recently renovated my house and went for the coastal theme. With the majority of the reno now complete, Im really looking for ways to fill a large wall on my stairs.

The wall is about 5m high and the stairs leads up to a mezzanine level.

A couple of ideas I'm thinking about:

  1. placing a large arched mirror behind the door and then just some art work hung as I walk up the stairs

  2. a mural covering the entire wall

  3. long canvas art work that would hang down about 3m.

Last pic is a the arched mirror that I love.

Would love to hear your thoughts

It will be difficult with door if you hang something on wall where it will swing and hit it. The wall needs some colour and it would continue it along the bulkhead across the door and front window. Replace the doormat with a round rug and a bigger rug in front of couch to go round the sitting area. You could look at a fabric wall hanging on the big wall. Or a picture sculpture. Go large.

Hi Kate, yes the fabric wall was one of my ideas i was thinking about but I'm struggling to find shops that sell this kind of art work locally.

Yes the mat is only temporary. I have a large rug picked out but waiting for delivery

I like the mirror , and I assume you do too , that's why you posted the pic . I'd actually mix things up , and bear Kates advice too . I'd do at least 3 smaller colourful pictures ( around 400 x 600 or even smaller -- maybe even colourful sea scenes or abstract sea pics ) and have them going up at the same angle as the stairs , BUT have the first one just a bit 'in' from where the door opens to , AND instead of the 2nd picture , I'd have the mirror .

The mirror is bigger than the pictures , so will be maybe 2.5-3 metres in from the 'door corner' and probably be 1.5metres from the floor ( so 2.7 metres approx at the top ) , and then have the next picture stepped up again .

That will get the colour aspect , fill in the wall , and get that interesting mirror there too . If you want the mirror to check out your dress sense before you leave each day , its probably not ideal , but as a feature and still partially useful , as well as the interest that mirrors give off ( the 'view' changes twice as much as you move ) , I love it .

Just another comment , even though you say about a coastal theme , I'd go brighter on the couch cushions -- even light and medium pastel blues , a couple of cottony yellow , even a lineny red or two mixed in there ?

The arch mirror needs an anchor when hung ie table, planter, etc. it will look orphaned as a stand alone, and possibly a little odd in that position. Is there somewhere else in the house you could use it?

Hi Tommy, what a fabulous space, I would choose a large artwork or you could even try a few pieces together, it looks a contemporary space so if going a mirror I would choose a square black frame , beautiful home.

Depending on where you live (at the beach or inspired some favourite location) there are some amazing photographers around who capture seascapes etc - both straight or with modern manipulation to more abstract. Such work came be printed in larger format as canvas or decal. That look amazing on that wall space.

Hi TommyG, your own instinct and the more recent advice is the soundest - a single large artwork or mirror is what's needed to anchor the space, but as the mirror wouldn't be reflecting anything but an interior wall in that position, go with the artwork.

That's always a highly personal choice, but we specialise in oversize canvases (single panels up to 2.8m, or larger spans across several panels) so if you find something you love in our online gallery, we can create it in dimensions you require - as this 2.4m high artwork illustrates.

You know it's probably not your style as you said you went coastal but that space would look fabulous with long length of marimekko fabric hanging down (cheaper than buying a wallhanging)

I love the siirt... whatever the name is. Was going to get the black and white one but found an original art work instead in the end. The orange one would look great in your space.
I realise possibly not to your taste.
If it was 2010 I wouldhave suggested a vintage tram scroll!

And because I saw you liked a curved couch elsewhere I thought I'd show you this:

Wow these actually look really nice. Could you suggest a wall light that could go well with these?

They are beautiful, I love the swing arm wall lights they can be adjusted to highlight the wall art, or the stairs but there are so many that would suit your beautiful house

    congratulations on yourn home!

I personally like anything 3-dimensional, such as intricate wall art

    vertical indoor garden walls

    or mixed material framed art.
