1950s devoid of character

we are in the process of buying this 1950s house which is in a super spot but is devoid of any character whatsoever. I’ve always lived in Victorian or Georgian houses and am in a dilemma as to what to do with it. I don’t like mid-century so it’s a bit of a conundrum for me. We are both drawn to cottages and wonder if we could make it into one or should we go elegant aka Georgian? We have the funds to extend and it needs another room. I’d love to know what you all think. Windows need replacing so I see this as an opportunity to change the style of the house.

It’s amazing what can be achieved with a property similar to yours. Lovely example below where the windows and extensions have added loads of character.....

I think this house has lots of potential.
I think the above picture illustrates what can be done by changing the proportions of the windows. Personally I think this means deeper upstairs windows and swapping the French doors (which seem odd at the front) for a bay window.
There are architects who specialise in this kind of transformation- perhaps you need to get an idea of styles you like and what layout you need the extended house to have so you have a great brief for the architect. Personally I think the current roof pitch excludes the possibility of a Victorian or Georgian style but of course extending upwards might change the roof pitch.

At the moment it seems a mismatch of styles. ‘Art Deco’ metal (?) windows; ‘Victorian’ cottage front door; ‘antique’ porch light and ’90s style UPVC(?) french doors. 🙂

I agree with the suggestion to involve an architect. It’s a good house, from what I can see) but it’s easy to get lost without professional help.

I would be a little cautious in going for a ‘period’ style and creating something pastiche.

That‘s not to say you shouldn’t let yourself be inspired by a period.

    If that makes sense...
