    we use both round and boxed, each column has it's place depending on the style of the house

      Funny, I have the round (suited my portico better) but favor the boxed.

      In a more modern home I would go for the round without the crown or base - just a simple round post.

      I went with boxed. Everything about my home seems to have cleaner and tighter lines. Gotta go with the bones of the house.

      Boxed. My 1926 bungalow has almost no curves to it. The porch front column, which is one of the few things that survived the previous owners, is boxed and tapered.
