Would you put in an island or not?

Hello. These are photos of the kitchen in the house we are moving into the week after next. The kitchen dimension is 5.32 metres x 4.18 metres.

I am wondering whether to put in an island or not. If we did I was thinking the same units but painted perhaps dark blue. But my concern is whether it would block the flow.

My other issue is that we have a range oven atm and are concerned how we will cope with a single oven. Any thoughts?

We built a number of bespoke kitchens this year and all our customers love them once they are in. Mostly say how sociable they are.
Attached picture is of our smallest kitchen room we did in Devon, where they thought it was not possible but are super glad to have it.
+1 for islands from us.

Hi Jane. By looking on floor tiles it seems there is decent space on middle, however if you put island in middle it will change way you using kitchen. It would be comfy to have extra worktop in middle with some good storage area. But than you may need to walk around to other part of kitchen, so key question is what you really want to achieve. Is it storage space or extra work surface?

I would go with the island unit as I actually think it will make the flow feel better rather than having a large wasted space you have to walk through.

It would be more work and changes, if possible at all, but you could look at adding another oven into the island if that is the main thing you feel you may miss in the large kitchen. At least the island would give you that option.

I would obviously need to have seen a floor plan and get to know your requirements a little better to say all this as fact of course :) Do let us know what you decide.

Hola MONICA: Gracias por explicarte. Si no te obstinas por poner fotos tuyas variadas y pequeñás, puedes encargar un vinilo autadhesivo, con una imagen de la más alta definición, que haga tu instrumento, o comprar alguna en un banco de imágenes. Procuras que la parte alta izquierda sea lo más neutra posible y pegas la imagen sobre el paramento completo, incluso sobre el frente del split. El resto, puedes hasta pintarlo a spray del color que requiera, para camuflarse mejor.

Buenas noches gestión estética! Muchas gracias por tus comentarios e ideas aportadas, la verdad es que estamos muy ilusionados con el proyecto pero también es cierto que es una reforma de cierta envergadura por nuestra intención de actualizar y hacer más cómoda la vivienda (en la actualidad no cuenta ni con ducha!) pero a la vez intentar mantener los elementos estéticos de la época que le confieren el encanto que tiene al piso. Agradecemos cualquier asesoramiento ya que las reformas las emprenderemos nosotros mismos, sin ningún arquitecto o interiorista que lidere el proyecto, contrataremos directamente a los profesionales que han de ejecutar la obra, por lo que nos surgen muchas dudas de la mejor opción estética / económica / práctica en diversos elementos. Adjunto otro elemento en el que no llegamos encontrar la opción ideal, hay 2 salas que están separadas también por la misma marquetería que en el dormitorio y unos armarios a ambos lados. Nos gustan estéticamente (no en ese color quizás) pero seria más practico que las 2 salas no estuvieran separadas (una estaría destinada a comedor y la otra a sala de estar), por los que nos planteamos o eliminarlo todo (con dolor en el corazón) o una opción intermedia como vaciar solo la parte central, o la parte central y uno de los laterales. ¿Consejo? Por privado (si se puede hacer esto aquí) podría enviar plano completo del piso y más dudas que tenemos! Gracias!

I'd have an island. There's a lot of wasted floor space without one. It makes part of the kitchen look bare.

I would lean towards the idea of an island. You have ample space in your kitchen and it will create a lovely space for entertaining whilst cooking

Love the prep table option. Planning to paint the far wall in the living room a dark blue or grey so could paint the unit the same colour.?

what surface do you think? Granite, marble, ...?

I would opt for quartz in the kitchen no sealing required and antibacterial. Granite and marble are stunning but you do need to be careful with them especially if your thinking of light colour. Would be more than happy to go through some colour options with you

The cooker and hob do look a bit small for the space. I'm not personally a fan of ovens (or microwaves) under counter level but everyone's different, tho you could definitely fit in a multi oven cooker of whatever type you prefer. Re Island, the French doors look quite wide or is it just the perspective that makes them look like that? Do they open into the kitchen or the other way? You will need to take their "swing" into account. I might be inclined to relocate the units from the L into the corner on the other side of the opening to aid flow round an Island. Looks a great space.

I would live in it for a while and try to put things where you will want to keep them and then give it some thought. For example, where the current cooker/hob is, there is not much worktop space for putting down hot things and it looks a little closed in with the upper cupboards - you may want to remove these. You may not know how you will manage with a single oven until you try. Looking at the first image, I would consider removing all of the upper cupboards and block of storage on the left wall where the fridge is. I like the idea of an island on legs as it would not look too heavy and could be in a contrasting colour. Will you be keeping the integrated fridge freezer of do you have an American style one? We lived with our truly vile early nineties kitchen for a year which was awful but it enable us to really understand how to design our new one. Good luck.
