Window treatments --Why so expensive?

Hi All,

We need help in finding a cheaper way to do window shades.We like roman shade but it is very expensive.Any idea how to do window shades economically?

    The least expensive route for romans, is for you to make them yourself. There are some Youtube instructions to make quick romans. As a fabricator, I have to make sure my roman shades meet child safety which requires twice as much work. I want them to be fabricated so they raise and lower beautifully -that requires adding hidden ribs to the fabrication. I fabricate so pinholes don't show through a blackout lining- requires more work. Prices are based on time to fabricate, cost of materials, design consultation, and install. It is amazing how quickly things add up.

      I even have a sewing pattern from "Sewing for Dummies" for Roman shades, lol.

      As to why they are so expensive, well I guess everyone wants to be fairly compensated for their hard work and expertise...

      Custom window treatments can get pricey, as the listing of what goes into them above shows. They are also key elements to the design of the room, so you want them to be made well. A roman shade is typically fabricated in a local work room by skilled seamstresses who make each one specifically to the designed specifications. Then they are transported to your home, installed and dressed - in order to have the finished product exceed your expectations.

      There are many ways to DIY - and you should check them out -

      There is a lot that goes into the making of a quality window treatment - quality fabric, the correct lining and interlining for the job, correct measurement, correct proportion for the space, and in the case of Roman shades, besides materials, child safety standards, and lift systems, it has GOT to be square and that can be challenging for a DYI-er.

      Roller shades are a very economical product! There are all kinds of roller shades - fabric, woven wood look, screen shades, blackout, sheer, and many more options.
