    Hi. Thank you for your question. Soapstone is softer than many other natural stones, such as granite and quartzite; therefore it is much easier to ding and scratch. As a matter-of-fact, I can almost guarantee that your surface will accumulate scratches with regular use--no matter how careful you are. On the other hand, the heat and stain resistant countertop will last well beyond your lifetime, developing a patina as it ages. To those who love the material, it will look better and better as it wears, but soapstone is not for everyone. If you are drawn to the warmth and character of natural materials, appreciate the beauty of imperfection, and are comfortable with a surface that will change as it ages, then I would highly recommend soapstone as a very suitable and durable kitchen countertop surface.
