9. Pretty Pendants
Designer Alison Kandler added a bevy of architectural elements to this Los Angles family room, including ceiling beams, tongue-and-groove paneling on the walls and ceilings, and built-ins backed by wallpaper. To complete the look, she added semiflush-mount drum pendant lights to the ceiling. “Light fixtures can add so much interest to a ceiling,” Kandler says. “I try to avoid recessed can lights whenever possible.”

8. Enlightened Integration
There’s lots to love about this Boston family room designed by Patrick Ahern Architect. A window near the top of the peaked ceiling brings in great natural light that allows the trim and molding in various shades of white to stand out. Note the custom frame that helps integrate the TV and hides wires that run into the wall.

5. Lovely Blue Built-In Bookcases
Finding the right paint color for the built-in bookcases in this Colorado living room was key to setting the tone for the rest of the space, says Lauren Winter of Duet Design Group. “We wanted to paint it a deep color to serve as the focal point and frame for the fireplace,” Winter says. “Benjamin Moore’s Dark Pewter was the perfect blue-green tone that informed the rest of the color palette.”

3. Well-Situated Sofa
“People tend to want to place their sofas right against the wall,” Irene Lovett of designstiles says. “I always try to float the sofa a bit and give the sofa some breathing room.” In the Santa Monica, California, living room seen here, she also placed a console behind the sofa and brought in large-scale lamps to fill the negative space between the sofa and the high windows.
