Who: Maurice Meagher of Case Design/Remodeling Halifax
Where: Halifax, Nova Scotia
In his own words: “Renovations are very personal. These are individual homes and families, and we’re working with them through what can be a stressful process.”
Want to make changes to your home but don’t know where or how to begin? It’s more common than you might think. General contractor Maurice Meagher, who owns Case Design/Remodeling Halifax, frequently provides guidance to clients from the idea phase through completion.
“Some people already know exactly what they want down to the last detail,” Meagher says. “But quite often we see clients who want us to work with them from exploration to design, refinement and, of course, the build itself.”

Zero in on design. Even though all renovations vary in budget and scope, your design elements should be your top priority, Meagher says: “In addition to what you want to achieve functionally, the details of your design — the look and feel, layout and materials selections — are really important. Once all of that is determined, you can start a renovation with clear expectations.”
Ask for help if you need it. If you’re struggling to visualize your renovation, your contractor can help generate ideas. “Many contractors can help to formulate a budget, identify a client’s style and understand layout options,” Meagher says. “Clients should know that it’s OK to ask for help in these areas.”

1. Gather Inspiration
Creating a Houzz ideabook and sharing it with your contractor will help communicate your goals for the space, Meagher says. “Our clients in the South End wanted to transform their outdated bathroom into a stylish modern space while adding room for storage,” he says. “They shared their ideabook with us so we understood their style and needs. We were able to design and select materials to stay within their budget and create a contemporary, functional bathroom. In my opinion, good design means coming up with effective, personalized solutions.”

2. See Your Space in 3-D
If the technology is available, work with your contractor to create a 3-D rendering of what you’d like your space to look like, Meagher advises. This step will help both you and your contractor envision the finished space before the renovation begins.
“We put together 3-D renderings for clients in Central Halifax based on the photos and ideas they presented to us,” he says. “When we met with them, they took one look at the rendering and said, ‘That’s exactly what we were going for.’”

3. Find a One-Stop Shop
If you would feel more comfortable having guidance every step of the way, look for a contractor who offers end-to-end services, from the initial concept through design, construction and completion, Meagher says.
“The benefit of working with a full-service contractor is that it’s a collaborative and efficient build process with input from all sides,” he says. “For these clients in Central Halifax, we merged estimating, design and construction together to deliver their vision. Then we presented samples of materials and worked closely with them through the selections phase to ensure they stayed within their budget and felt confident with the decision process.”

I am so excited I came across this article here on Houzz... my husband and I just moved to the Halifax area two weeks ago. We are in the process of settling into our temp digs as we get to know areas here in order to buy a property. I know that quite often when we view properties on Realtor.ca that we say, we could change this or that...and I wondered, well who could do this and do it the way they show all of the creative designs and renos like on HGTV, and now thanks to this article...I know that Maurice and his company exist here for when the time comes.
