Pave the way to a smoother remodel using these tips from a San Jose and Los Angeles-area construction professional

Who: Oren Dagan of SOD Home Group
Where: San Jose and Encino, California
In his own words: “Home improvement isn’t just about changing the aesthetics or layout of a space. It’s an entire process that begins with someone’s story.”
The end goal of any renovation is a bright, shiny new space that incorporates style dreams and meets all your needs. With the right planning in place, materials that suit you and a well-organized schedule, it’s entirely possible to achieve your dream space while keeping an even keel along the way. “It’s all about asking the right questions,” says Oren Dagan, owner of SOD Home Group, a full-service construction company based in both San Jose and Encino. “And knowing what you’re going to do from the outset.”

A lifelong journey. The house that Dagan grew up in was built from scratch by his father as a hobby. Dagan also enjoys working with his hands. “[As a kid] I could take a television apart and rebuild it,” he says. With professional experience in both construction and management, he opened his firm in 2009 to merge those talents with his people skills. “I always give my heart and soul to my clients,” he says.
Project planner. Dagan especially likes digging into the logistical challenges that any building or remodeling project naturally presents. His particular point of pride? Guaranteeing jobs are done on time while sticking to his high standards. “If you plan it right and build it right, then things will get done faster,” he says. Customer service is a key focus, with every project assigned a designer and a project manager. “We like to have things done once and uniquely, we build based on the clients’ life,” he says. The team translates what each client wants into a remodel that delivers.

1. Be Realistic About Timing
Make sure everyone is on the same page and that there are firm guidelines in place, Dagan says. “Be clear about when you need to get things done and choose every single thing ahead of time.”
Palo Alto clients did an entire home remodel along with a garage conversion into an in-law unit and an addition to the front of the house. The owner quickly selected materials that were in stock, and Dagan organized all the trades to be working on the home at the same time, so that the electrician was finishing up the south side of the house while the plumber was on the north side and the roofer was overhead. The result? The entire project was finished in three months.

2. Choose Materials Wisely
Work with your designer or contractor to find materials and fixtures that fit your specific needs, Dagan says. “Know what makes the most sense for you.”
For this home in Los Gatos, the owner wanted a modern farmhouse look that was low-maintenance and simple. White subway tile provides a crisp white backdrop to industrial-style pendant lights and durable quartz countertops. Gray cabinets lend a contemporary hue, while bright yellow stools add a splash of whimsy.

3. Dial In on Details
“People think about the big picture, but it’s really about the details,” Dagan says. He recommends thinking through aspects such as how the size of your bed will determine placement of outlets, lights and other fixtures.
When dreaming of their remodel, the owners of this Thousand Oaks home knew they wanted their master bathroom to have the feel of a hotel spa. Toward that end, Dagan helped the couple consider the smaller elements: The bathtub is placed so that the wife can soak while she looks out at their pool, light fixtures are set at the same height as the shower head, and the vanity countertop is stepped down at the center so the wife can sit while she puts on makeup. “Everything has a purpose,” Dagan says.
