“Utah is known for large families and family values,” says Heather Osmond, who owns Osmond Designs, with a showroom in Lehi and an outlet in Orem. The designer helps her clients create pretty, warm spaces ideal for family life.
A serendipitous start. Born and raised in Utah, Osmond fell in love with furniture design and interior design at an early age. She went to the Parade of Homes — a design showcase — with her parents every year and “absolutely loved seeing what was out there,” she says.
Osmond moved into real estate during college and quickly found she had a knack for staging homes. Soon other agents were hiring her to transform their clients’ houses, and she found that she had a business on her hands.

It’s about the people. “My favorite thing about my job is the people and the friendships that I make,” Osmond says. She believes that everyone should love their home, and understands that the definition of an ideal space differs from family to family. “I’m really passionate and purposeful about what I’m doing and who I’m doing it for,” Osmond says. “My goal is to try to make each client’s home the happiest place on earth for them.”

1. Make It Personal
Design a home that fits you and your family to a T. “Try to find lots of fun things that relate to your family so your home really reflects their tastes and their loves,” Osmond says. If you want to mix some trendy statements with your tried-and-true pieces, she recommends selecting less-expensive items you can easily swap out later.
She created the bright, welcoming entryway seen here for clients in Lehi. The family loves the color turquoise and wanted lots of natural light. Osmond started with the vibrant wool rug and brought in a mix of geometric shapes to add elements of fun.

2. Make It Durable
Choose fabrics that can withstand the day-to-day wear and tear of children and pets, and still look lovely. “There are so many beautiful fabrics that have stain-resistant qualities,” Osmond says. She suggests using easy-to-clean materials such as wool, chenille and certain velvets.
Osmond created the kid-friendly living room in Sandy seen here using stylish yet durable materials. The sturdy wool rug and natural wood ottoman will last for years, while the leather sofa can be easily wiped down. Stain-resistant pillows round out the space.

3. Make It Open
Create an inviting, airy kitchen and family room to encourage gathering and entertaining. “These rooms are the heart of the home; they’re where memories are made and important conversations happen,” Osmond says. She suggests mixing painted surfaces with stained woods to provide a nice contrast and a sense of warmth.
The open kitchen and family room seen here make for a welcoming gathering spot in this Park City vacation home. The clients love to entertain, and wanted plenty of space and seating options; they also requested bright, fun colors. The sliding doors in the kitchen and family room lead to a patio filled with cushy seats, so parties can spill outside during the warmer months.
