Who: Brandon Hatch of Big Rock Landscaping
Where: Salt Lake City
In his own words: “Many homeowners are trying to expand their living space to create an outdoor environment that’s cohesive with their interior. It ensures a seamless space for entertaining, whatever the season.”
Ever find yourself wishing you could throw an impromptu outdoor dinner party, but don’t want to subject your guests to the plastic table and chairs on your patio? Landscape architect Brandon Hatch can help.
“Clients are coming to us to create a space that not only is super functional but also looks great and really flows,” says Hatch, who owns Big Rock Landscaping in Salt Lake City. He creates outdoor environments that complement clients’ homes and allow them to enjoy their time outside more.

A lifetime of transformation. Hatch’s father was a landscaper. “I often worked alongside him growing up,” Hatch says. “To this day, whether the project is a clean slate or an update on an old home, I love the transformation. I’m excited by the creative process and being able to collaborate with clients to create something great.”
Natural solutions. Hatch started Big Rock in 1990. “I started the business with the intent of creating landscape spaces where homeowners can enjoy living and entertaining,” he says. “We really want to create beautiful, livable solutions that feel natural and take advantage of their environment.”
Read on for Hatch’s tips on designing a functional space that’s ideal for entertaining.

1. Size Up Your Stonework
Hatch recommends going big on your patio. “A patio really ties a landscape together and provides a multipurpose space,” he says. “Many clients want to use their landscapes for entertaining, which requires a larger area. I also advise homeowners to select their furniture prior to starting the project so we know exactly what size we’re working with.”
For the Highland yard seen here, “we wanted to create as much functionality as possible,” Hatch says. “A large patio made the space cohesive by serving as a common backdrop for lounging by the pool or in the sitting area, sitting by the fire pit or cooking in the outdoor kitchen.”

2. Add Natural Seating
To unify your outdoor space, install features such as low retaining walls, steps, logs or large rocks that double as seating. “You can never have enough seating when you’re entertaining, and overloading your space with furniture looks chaotic and cluttered,” Hatch says. “Natural seating beautifies a space using natural elements and reduces your need to buy a lot of furniture.”
Hatch created the year-round outdoor living space seen here for Alpine clients. “Instead of building a flat patio where you have furniture that can’t be out during the winter, we included a fire pit with seating, a heated walkway and lots of walls that act as natural seating,” he says. “This allows the homeowners and their guests to enjoy the area in all seasons.”

3. Design for the Future
To make your space cohesive, create a master plan. “Even if you don’t have the money for every feature, a plan will ensure it aesthetically flows when you do,” Hatch says. “Designing the whole yard upfront will give everything a place and a purpose and improve the environment’s overall aesthetic.”
The landscaping for the Holladay property seen here required a lot of upfront planning to ensure that the natural elements and the constructed elements complemented one another. “The planning made all the difference,” Hatch says. “When we built the pool, the homeowners waited on building the cabana, but we put the necessary materials in place so when they do decide to build it, it won’t look out of place.”
