Pro Spotlight: Design Your Home for the Way You Live
A Naples designer explains how a perfectly personalized home begins with understanding yourself

Who: Dominique Coffman of Design West
Where: Naples, Florida
In her own words: “You want everything to look like you thought about it from the very beginning.”
Your home should be customized just for you. So it only makes sense for an interior design company to begin your project by really getting to know you, designer Dominique Coffman says. “We collect every piece of information we can, so that later on in the design process we can get it right,” says Coffman, the vice president of design at Design West in Naples.

So it only makes sense for an interior design company to begin your project by really getting to know you, designer Dominique Coffman says. “We collect every piece of information we can, so that later on in the design process we can get it right,” says Coffman, the vice president of design at Design West in Naples.
A personal approach. Coffman doesn’t just want to get to know her clients for the purposes of the project; she also wants everyone involved in the process to enjoy it. “This is supposed to be fun,” she says. “You’re at a point in your life where you can do a full interior design of your home.”
From ceiling to floor. As a clearer picture of a client’s needs emerges, Coffman says she likes to begin by looking up — designing tray ceilings, for instance, and mapping out the placement of lighting fixtures to coordinate with the locations of windows and planned seating.

1. Approach Design Top to Bottom
Ensuring harmony both high and low is the key to designing spaces that are both beautiful and highly functional, Coffman says: “Ceilings and a general floor-plan layout are really the basis for every other thing that happens later. Pay attention to how the lighting flows with the furniture below.”
In the kitchen seen here, in the Talis Park subdivision of Naples, the Design West team ensured that the pendant lighting above the two islands was functional as well as beautiful. The lights above the secondary island are spaced evenly and hang from plain drywall, while the coordinating fixtures above the primary island are artfully clustered above the sink and hang from a wood-detailed tray ceiling.

2. Watch Your Step
Determine how you’ll move through each room and how you want spaces to function. “Think about the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the house before you get into the tiny details of furniture,” Coffman says.
The English owners of the Naples family room seen here wanted a snug yet airy space where they could relax and watch TV. “We don’t typically put a sectional in front of a slider like that,” Coffman says. In this case, however, the clients had lived in smaller, European-style flats, and it just felt right. “They liked that it was a cozier room,” she says. And there’s plenty of space behind the couch to get through the sliding doors.

3. Get the Light Right
Whether you desire a homey, private feel or want a large space for entertaining guests, Coffman recommends mapping out the placement of lighting and electrical outlets during the design process. “You can have beautiful design, but if it’s not lit correctly and the electrical locations are off, it can ruin what might have been amazing,” she says.
Good lighting design could be something as simple as making sure you have light switches by your bedside, or it could be more involved, such as installing customized lighting — as Design West did in this Talis Park kitchen. Here, the top of the central island and the stone slab above the range are fashioned out of translucent white onyx. They are both backlit, and they glow when the overhead lights are off at night.
