Flourishing in their field. Traugott started in the pool business in 1999 before founding Sunset Pools with her husband in 2001. Throughout its two decades in business, Sunset Pools has stayed ahead of the curve when it comes to outdoor living, whether that’s outdoor kitchens, landscape lighting or the latest automation in pool technology. “I’m so proud of our design team,” Traugott says. “Everyone is super creative, loves what they do and brings a different point of view, which you can see in what we build.”
Investing in the bigger picture. Homeowners typically don’t spend much time contemplating the design of their outdoor space. “Some clients have done their research and have an idea, but for the most part they’re looking for a helping hand and a guided vision,” Traugott says. She advises homeowners to start with an accurate investment goal before the design process starts so that the designers can thoughtfully utilize the budget across the entire outdoor space. “Your investment goal should account for the entire backyard, including landscaping, light and sound,” Traugott says.

1. Incorporate Your Home’s Style
Traugott kicks off her consultations by asking a few pertinent questions, such as whether the homeowners have young children, love to entertain or are looking for a relaxing space to unwind. Next, she looks at their home. “So much depends on what style of home they have and where it’s situated,” she says. “Is it traditional, modern or Craftsman? Is it situated on a large lot in the country or tucked away in the city?”
These downtown Houston homeowners wanted an outdoor space that reflected their city setting and modern sensibilities. “After looking at their modern interior, we were inspired to incorporate unique metal features throughout the space that perfectly fit the home’s atmosphere,” Traugott says. The steel fire feature alongside the pool was created by a custom welder, and glass tile on the pool steps and sun shelf continue the contemporary look.

2. Match the Materials
Another easy step in creating a cohesive outdoor space? Use your home’s materials. “Material choices are huge,” Traugott says. “If a home has a brick base, we’ll use the same brick in their outdoor kitchen. If their home is stucco, we’ll use stucco in the same color palette. And this same idea applies to our swimming pool material selections as well.”
These Richmond homeowners hoped to add a pool and pool house that made sense alongside their modern farmhouse home. The Sunset Pools team matched the existing siding and roofing materials exactly. “The goal is to design something that looks like it’s always been there,” Traugott says. The turf inlay around the edge of the pool adds a visual break to the light-colored concrete deck that connects the two buildings.

3. Leave No Stone Unturned
Skipping a few steps in your outdoor design can have an unexpected effect. “It’s very obvious if you leave the pool with nothing around it, like new sod or grass,” Traugott says. “And for a visually cohesive space, your large features like pools and kitchens should be tied together by walkways.”
Another key design detail brings this Houston home together. “This home’s outdoor design features a complete guesthouse, outdoor kitchen and pool with a swimming lane, but the lighting design adds an extra dimension,” Traugott says. “Strip lighting and spotlight lighting complete the look and create a beautiful nighttime scene.”
