Who: Tyler Dettbarn of Omega Building Group
Where: Caledon, Ontario
In his own words: “I love being able to hand over a brand-new custom home to a family and help them start the next chapter in their lives.”
You’ve imagined it for years: a home designed to fit your personal style and how you want to live. Getting started turning that dream into a reality can be challenging, though. “People say that they don’t want a cookie-cutter house but one that’s built around how they live,” says Tyler Dettbarn, the owner of Omega Building Group in Caledon. “They just don’t know how to begin.”

A custom construction background. Dettbarn grew up surrounded by the construction business after his family started Omega Building Group in 1993. “I’ve been involved from a young age,” he says. He studied industrial design and branched out at the start of his career, working in Western Canada. When his father retired in 2015, Dettbarn returned home to take over the management and ownership of Omega Building Group, and he’s been running the company ever since.
Creating the vision. Dettbarn says one of the best parts of his profession is seeing the homeowners’ visions for their homes come to life. “Tastes and preferences all vary, so it’s exciting for us to create a different experience for each homeowner,” he says. The process includes keeping up with constantly changing trends and technologies while also making sure that people will have a home that complements their lifestyle. “It needs to add to their happiness and quality of life,” Dettbarn says.

1. Focus on What You Love
Prioritize what’s important to you and design around those features. “These homeowners wanted their new-build home in Richmond Hill to have an indoor-outdoor feel,” Dettbarn says. The centerpiece is a two-story living room framed by massive windows and doors that open to both the front and back yards. The scale of the room makes it feel like an airy atrium. “There’s a lot of height and light,” Dettbarn says.
Carrara marble adds a classic touch and wood accents bring warmth and interest. The highlight of the space is found at one end of the living area. There, an indoor fountain empties into a pond, with a living wall situated next to it to bring more outdoor elements into the home.

2. Seek Inspiration
Use what has inspired you, either locally or globally, to create the look you want. “You can find information and inspiration in many areas,” Dettbarn says.
In this same house, the family wanted the bedrooms to reflect the home’s contemporary and clean look but also to have a peaceful and serene vibe. “There needed to be some softness,” Dettbarn says. In this bedroom, he started with soft white walls and added a walnut accent frame on the wall behind the bed. Walnut flooring also warms up the space. A continuous light strip that runs along the edges of the ceiling soffit and along the sides of the accent wall creates a soft, inviting glow.

3. Highlight Your Home’s Character
Use the textures and materials that resonate with your vision. In this Flamborough farmhouse, the owner wanted an entirely new home but also hoped to keep the original 1860s fieldstone structure. Dettbarn left some exterior walls in place and turned the others into interior walls, as seen here. “We kept all the original fieldstone,” he says.
He also expanded the home from 2,000 square feet (about 185 square meters) to 4,800 square feet (about 445 square meters) and redid the foundation. The original wood beams were hollowed out so they could wrap around the new steel supports while preserving the farmhouse look. “The end result turned out to be perfect and exactly what the homeowner wanted,” Dettbarn says.
