A Boca Raton designer shares how to bring individual style to a contemporary Florida look

Who: Nikki Levy
Where: Boca Raton, Florida
In her own words: “We owe it to people to give them something completely individual.”
Breezy, cool and calm elements are hallmarks of contemporary beach-inspired style. This look is the perfect match for South Florida’s aquamarine waters, white sand and sunshine, says Nikki Levy, who owns her eponymous design firm in Boca Raton. To take a Floridian oasis to the next level, Levy encourages homeowners to add their own personalized twist to the theme. “You don’t want it to be too cookie-cutter,” she says.

A growing group of clients. “I’ve loved design since I was a little kid, rearranging my mom’s furniture while she was at work,” says Levy, who’s originally from South Africa. She funneled her creativity into advertising until life took an unexpected turn. “My boss asked me to help with her home, then friends asked, and then friends of friends, and on and on,” she says.
Levy soon found herself with a burgeoning design business, and founded Nikki Levy Interiors in 2012. In 2019, she expanded her team to help even more homeowners. “It’s growing, but I still have a hand in everything,” she says.

Destined for design. “I should have always been in the design world,” Levy says. “I love design … full stop.” She enjoys watching homes come together and helping families create their dream spaces. “I love seeing how you can take shape, texture, pattern and color and blend them together to get infinite possibilities,” she says.

1. Play Up Your Passions
Focus your design on what you love, Levy says. For example, one Delray Beach homeowner’s passion is bourbon, so the team turned her living room into a bourbon-tasting room.
The 22-foot bar is the standout centerpiece of the room with its custom millwork, agate-look acrylic center panel and impressive collection of bourbon. The bold black and gold tones of the bar, reminiscent of an old-fashioned club, are echoed in the black-and-white panda marble top. They also provide a welcome counterpoint to the home’s more traditional white walls. A neon sign, crafted by the homeowner, adds finishing flair.

2. Keep the Original Charm
Add a fresh feel to an older home by blending original features with modern updates. The homeowners of the Delray Beach home seen here, built in the ’70s, were looking for a more welcoming design that would still preserve some of the original features and outdoor connection.
The team added natural wood boards to the living area’s previously white ceiling, highlighting the home’s original beams. “It adds some whimsy,” Levy says. Contemporary furnishings provide a modern, relaxed feel and suit the room’s open layout. The neutral color palette brings a beachy vibe, while accessories add unexpected color and interest.

3. Provide a Balance
Use accessories and details to keep your home’s high-ceilinged and open spaces from feeling cold or sterile. “You need to make rooms feel cozy and add warmth, but still consider the climate,” Levy says.
Sea-foam-green curtains brighten the voluminous living room seen here, in another Delray Beach home, without making the space feel too heavy or closed off. “Hanging the curtains from above the top row of windows creates a sense of cohesiveness rather than chopping up the space,” Levy says. The color also provides a subtle contrast to the pure white of the walls and the blues and grays of the rug and artwork.
