Pro Spotlight: 3 Ways Color Can Energize Your Home’s Look
An interior designer shares ideas for using color to play up your home’s interior

Who: Jere Bradwell
Where: South Florida and New Hope, Pennsylvania
In his own words: “Color is what makes the world go round. Its use can be the wow factor in your home.”
Interior designer Jere Bradwell has strong opinions about color. “As a designer, I know that every selection for your room is a color selection first,” he says. Color can come in the form of fabrics, accessories, furnishings and accent walls, and every color choice needs to be balanced and relate well to every other element in the room, Bradwell says. “Color impacts every choice we make,” he says.

Learning from nature. Bradwell started his design career creating faux floral and accessory items. He learned how to achieve a realistic look by studying flowers in nature. “Designing silk flowers and coordinating all the colors through the various varieties is where I got my sense of color,” Bradwell says. He brought that same color knowledge into play when he expanded his business to include interior design and founded J Bradwells Home & Design in 2012.
Florida focus. Bradwell based his company in Pennsylvania. He began working in South Florida as his clients in the Northeast tapped him to work with them on homes in that area. “I have a special love for the area because I am a Florida native,” Bradwell says. He’s also an enthusiastic gardener, which shows up in his designs, especially when working in Florida. “Outside we are surrounded by palms and brilliantly colored elements, so I want to bring that into the home,” he says.
Looking for ways to incorporate color in your own home? Bradwell has some tips below.

1. Wow With Wallpaper
Use wallpaper to set the tone for the room. “If you paint a wall a single color, that is all you will have, but a paper may bring shades of the color or a combination of color that helps tie other color elements together in the process,” Bradwell says.
He used a textured wallpaper with a palm tree pattern as the backdrop for the living room in this Sunny Isles condo. “It adds character and works well with the rest of the furnishings,” Bradwell says. The white couch, white chair bases and white-and-chrome coffee table keep things bright. A softly colored rug in blues, whites and grays, along with touches of blue in the chair cushions, lamps, pillows and mirror, add the finishing touches to this sophisticated take on oceanside living. “The homeowners wanted to bring the ocean view into the unit,” Bradwell says.

2. Celebrate Where You Live
Use the colors that are unique to your location. Bradwell incorporated natural and manmade references to the Florida location in this classic Mediterranean-style home in Naples. “It was a fun house with an interesting look,” he says.
A pink-toned console table designed to look like coral sets the stage in the entry of the home. It’s paired with a wall color that mimics the color of the Don CeSar hotel, a Florida landmark. “We wanted a traditional feel with a distinctive Florida color palette that was cheerful and warm,” Bradwell says.

3. Borrow From Nature
Bring colors found in nature into your design. In this same home, the vibrant blues of the 1,000-gallon saltwater aquarium set into the wall reflect the home’s oceanside location, creating the centerpiece of the overall design. “It was the motivation for the sea colors used in many parts of the home,” Bradwell says.
He opted for custom furnishings and window treatments along with a soft wall paint to highlight the fish tank. He also wanted to create a relaxing feel for the space. “It opens onto the lanai and is a place to enjoy conversations and drinks,” Bradwell says.
