Who: Hira Sabuhi
Where: Brooklyn, New York
In her own words: “You know you’ve found the right designer when you give them your needs, likes and dislikes and they create a cohesive design.”
Interior architect Hira Sabuhi says that designing a home that reflects who you are entails more than simply finding some pretty Pinterest pictures. Instead, the owner of the eponymous design studio in Brooklyn says it’s more akin to designing your personal brand. “It’s a deep insight into who you are and how you live,” Sabuhi says.

Always a designer. Sabuhi has been interested in art, architecture and design since childhood. “Being a creator was never a choice for me,” she says. Sabuhi combines that creative force with her interest in human psychology, color and science, creating spaces that people can interact within. “I’m all about bringing people together and connecting them through my work,” she says.
Finding the right answers. Sabuhi approaches each project with the goal of meeting both the emotional and pragmatic needs of the homeowners. She helps them discover what they love and make choices that reflect that. “I love the creative challenge of being able to draw from the infinite field of possibilities to create something fresh and new,” Sabuhi says.

1. Magnify the Light
Find ways to bring light into dark spaces within your home. The only light into this Bushwick apartment’s underground level came from the small terrace just outside it. “The homeowner wanted a space that would maximize the light but still feel like a cozy getaway,” Sabuhi says. Another requirement was space for an office and bathroom within that level.
Sabuhi created a frosted mirrored box around the office, zen space and bathroom. “The mirrors reflect the light that comes into the space from above the underground terrace,” she says. This makes the main living area feel larger while still providing privacy for the rest of the space. The mirror design also allows light to penetrate into the boxed-in rooms and provides a filtered view from within to the spaces outside.

2. Celebrate Nature
Add natural and organic touches to your space. “The homeowner also wanted to combine greenery and natural elements in the space,” Sabuhi says.
She responded by juxtaposing natural materials to play off the straight lines and contemporary look of the interior space. These included mahogany accents, Venetian plaster and softer edges on some of the harder materials. In addition, the reflections of the plants that can be seen in the mirror create a serene feel.

3. Mix Things Up
Combine existing pieces with a blend of high- and low-end finds to stay within budget. These homeowners in Williamsburg are influencers, so they needed a space that would work for photography without feeling too sterile or boxy. “My job was to keep the design timeless,” Sabuhi says.
She started with a sofa that fits well into the midcentury look of the home but adds some needed shape and softness. “It feels cozy,” she says. Sabuhi also added artwork and accessories from both well-known retailers and independent artists and artisans, whom she encourages people to support. “It’s a good way to find something unique,” she says.
