He has found it goes beyond a basic landscape upgrade. “They’re investing in hobby farms and interested in native plants,” Romaniak says. He uses his knowledge of design and plants to give homeowners their dream outdoor space.
Early education. Romaniak’s parents introduced him to gardens and gardening when he was young. “My father was in the Air Force and we visited gardens, parks and arboretums throughout Europe when he was stationed there,” Romaniak says. He earned an associate degree in horticulture at the School of Applied Science at the University of New Hampshire in Durham and a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He also interned at Longwood Gardens at the Dupont estate in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. After working both for himself and others, he opened his business in 2020.
Starting off right. Romaniak says a landscape design needs more than just a plan for hardscape and plants. It should also work for years to come. If you’re looking to turn your own home into a retreat for now and for the long run, Romaniak says, start with a master plan. “You can then do things in phases and it will be cohesive,” he says.

1. Include All the Bells and Whistles
Plan from the beginning to include everything you want in the design. Romaniak used that approach for the landscape of a new home in North Reading, Massachusetts. “It was an empty space and the homeowners wanted a showpiece,” he says.
The landscape plan includes everything on the homeowners’ wish list. “There’s a pool with a spa and shallow shelf to hold chaises as well as a fireplace and a fire pit,” Romaniak says. He was also able to add a full outdoor kitchen. Overhead, heaters built into the underside of the deck over one of the patio areas keep the fun going even when things get chilly.

2. Follow the Grade
Tailor your design to the contours of your land. “If you’re planning for a landscape that will last, you need to know how it will work with your site,” Romaniak says.
The original backyard of this Westford, Massachusetts, home had a precipitous slope from the end of the yard toward the house. “We first needed to dig out the hill and install drainage and supports,” Romaniak says. Once the underpinnings were in place, he created a lower-level dining area next to the house, a raised circular terrace with a large fire pit and seating area halfway up the slope and an upper level with grass and plantings that blends into the woods just beyond. Curved rock walls built of native New England stone soften the lines. The final touch is a slide for a quick journey from top to bottom.

3. Follow Your Passions
Add elements that create a personalized haven to relax in. “These homeowners wanted a colorful, relaxing landscape to help them enjoy their private setting,” Romaniak says of the landscape he designed for this home on Massachusetts’ South Shore.
He added curving garden beds to soften the edges of the grassy expanse and then filled it with a colorful palette of plants chosen to encourage local wildlife to visit. “They wanted to attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees,” Romaniak says. He also incorporated the evergreens that the homeowners wanted for winter interest. “I love the structure and color combination of the blue spruce with the soft texture of the roses and butterfly bush,” he says.
