Think lounging by the pool, grilling for both lunch and dinner and spending quality time with family. “We’re seeing more and more people taking money they would have spent on vacations and putting it into their yard,” says Quentin Nowland, the general manager at Lynch Landscape & Tree Service in Wayland. Love and landscaping. Michael Lynch, a passionate landscaper, and his wife, Kelleigh, founded the company in 1980, the same year their daughter Jayme was born. “Mike loves working with his hands, being outside and creating landscapes,” Nowland says. He joined Lynch Landscape in 2010 after he and Jayme met at college and got married. “Combining my father-in-law’s landscape background and my business background, we were able to work well together and ultimately grow the business,” Nowland says.
All about the customers. Lynch Landscape prides itself on its collaborative approach to design, always starting with an in-depth consultation to determine the client’s needs and wants. “It’s a solution-oriented philosophy,” Nowland says. “We take an idea from A to Z to create something the customer is really happy about. In the end, we want to exceed expectations.”

1. Add a Bocce Court
Bocce courts are rising in popularity, and with good reason. “This unique feature has allowed our customers to take advantage of space they weren’t previously using and have an amazing entertainment space,” Nowland says. “It’s an activity for everyone where you can unplug, get outside and have fun together.”
The team transformed this backyard in Wayland into a party- and lounge-ready space, complete with a bocce court, hot tub and deck. Naturalistic plantings and wood and pebble accents create the peaceful, country-style setting the clients desired. “They wanted the ability to get outside and enjoy nature, but also to be able to entertain,” Nowland says. Outdoor lighting lets the fun continue well into the night.

2. Incorporate Outdoor Dining
Few things say vacation like lounging in the sunshine with a delicious meal and drink. Nowland recommends installing an outdoor kitchen with a large grill, a side burner, a refrigerator and plenty of prep space to re-create resort-style dining at home. “Have the dining area nearby and other patio furniture near the pool for appetizers, lunch and drinks,” he says.
This Wayland backyard, with its spacious dining area, outdoor kitchen, living area and pool house bar, offers plenty of places for the owners to enjoy meals alfresco. “They were really looking for a backyard resort, somewhere they can come home and unwind,” Nowland says. A putting green, pool and outdoor shower add to the fun.

3. Include a Cozy Gathering Spot
Add a fire pit and some comfy seating for a fun evening under the stars. “Get the family together for a night of s’mores; listen to music, play an acoustic guitar and share stories,” Nowland says. You can design it to evoke memories of your favorite getaway, whether that’s a mountain cabin or beach house.
A secluded stone patio with a rustic fire pit and Adirondack chairs provides a relaxing spot for Wayland clients. “It’s a nice, quiet, serene little area to enjoy a fire and have your mini resort getaway,” Nowland says. Landscape lighting and a water feature enhance the ambiance.
