Against the Grain handcraft exceptional custom timber windows, doors and gates. Established in 2009 by master craftsman David Spees, Against the Grain has a reputation for both excellence in workmanship and professional service. Our made to measure windows, doors and gates feature traditional joinery with choice of speciality hardwoods and energy efficient double glazing. A skilled team design, manufacture and supply across NSW from our factory and showroom in the Blue Mountains village of Katoomba. Against the Grain use only Forest Stewardship Council and Rainforest Alliance certified timbers. We are proud members of the Window & Door Industry Council ensuring all projects are compliant with current Australian Window and Door Standards and Codes. We have had several windows and doors made and installed by Against the Grain and have always been very impressed with their craftsmanship and service. The work has always been on time and any problems have been dealt with immediately.

Against the Grain made us a replacement multi-pane casement window to replace a heritage fixed window. The job was delivered on time and installed in a day, in a somewhat difficult location. Against the Grain kept us informed of the progress of the build and made sure that the window operated correctly. Totally professional, totally competent.....

We recently bought our new home and it was time for it to be updated and restored. We spoke to a number of people to gain advice and quotes on how to maintain the original features of the home and how to remove some existing termite damage that we had known about at the time of purchase. These guys went above and beyond with the quote and offering recommendations on what we needed to do to upgrade the house, including double glazing the doors and windows, being energy efficient and improving the look of the property. Great craftsmanship, great team and the finish is going to last another 60 years. Im looking for ward to working with them on the next stage of the renovation in the future.

We had the team from Against The Grain Windows and Doors install a 1200 wide entry door at our house. I cannot thank them enough. The service, workmanship and attention to detail showed by the team, was second to none. Thank you very much. I highly recommend Against the Grain to anyone, looking for a quality job!

We had two sets of bespoke, Fifties-style, french doors made by Against the Grain to match an existing set on the front of the house. They constitute the best value for money for the whole renovation project. Beautifully made they have opened up the whole side of the house into the beautiful old mountain garden so that we can enjoy it all year round.

Our builder told us about Against the Grain as we wanted wooden gates built to match the pattern already on our front verandah gates. They came to the house to look at the driveway space and width and the verandah for matching up the pattern. They did a great job in two stages and also recommended a painter. We are very happy with our gates and side fence.

Against the Grain designed and built us a three panel sliding door with fitted insect screen in 2015. We found them to be knowledgeable, courteous and efficient. The product was delivered on time, on budget and according to specification. The carpenters (unrelated to Against the Grain) who fitted the door commented on its high quality and the ease of installation. The door attracts admiring comments from many visitors. The unique insect screen is a particularly admired item. We are delighted with this door and would use Against the Grain again.

I have a weatherboard house that was built in 1909 - Chris at Against the Grain has managed several projects for me - Against the Grain have made and installed replacement replica casement windows with working fan lights with the charm of the originals but with the advantage of double glazing - Tim did a great job with the installation - Against the Grain are currently making me a set of French Doors with sidelights - I would absolutely recommend Against the Grain - particularly for anyone wanting heritage style Windows and doors

Thank you Against the Grain for the beautiful western red cedar double glaze windows. They have totally transformed our house and have kept us cosy during the winter. No draughts even on those super windy days. It was a big investment for us, but worth every cent.

We are rebuilding our home after losing it in the 2013 bushfires, its been slow but part of the healing process has been engaging great trades people and replacing beautiful memories with beautiful new architectural delights. Against the Grain were engaged to build me a set of french doors. They worked from a photo and the final result was exactly what I wanted, I love them. Workmanship is excellent and from start to finish the communication with them was also.
