A punch list is made on the walk-through by the customer and the contractor and if acceptable to both parties the contractor will than proceed to complete the punch list. At our meeting three days later with our "owners and supervisor" a punch list was made out by both parties. Mr. Tremont did not want us to complete the punch list, stated below, as he felt it was not satisfactory to his wishes.
Our company does not hang doors. All of the customer's doors were painted by us as proposed in the bid except the 4 doors the owner said he was going to hang so we could proceed to paint but instead he left them on the floor in the garage.
All the furniture and floors were covered as our policy has been for 40 years. No paint was left on floors, furniture or electronics . Customer claimed he had to hire someone to shampoo his one rug and wanted us to reimburse him but could not show receipt for the job and did not inform our company about any spots he found before he hired.
All molding was finished and installed except two pieces that were put on the punch list to be done.
One cabinet door had 1/8 inch of scratch on bottom and our supervisor proposed to re stain the whole door which was put on list. Customer refused and wanted new cabinet.
One stripe, about 1/4 in. on one wall was put on list and to be redone by us but customer felt it would not look good so he wanted the whole room done over again at no cost.
Mirror was stored in closet so as not to be broken. It was than hung back up on wall fully intact. One small dot was found on bottom of edge of mirror so we put it on punch list to be touched up not knowing if it had been there previously, but owner wanted new mirror.
Light fixtures were covered with tape and any tape left on fixtures was on the punch list to be removed. Our policy has always been to gladly replace anything that might be accidentally broken but after the "owners and the supervisor" looked at all the fixtures the day the list was made we did not find any fixtures that were broken and the customer could not point out any broken fixtures.
Some small areas on the list had to be retouched with paint and some areas had small spots of paint to be wiped off but customer wanted the rooms that those areas were in to be completely repainted again at no extra cost to him.
None of the customers tools were touched as all of our employees have their own tool boxes and equipment which was left in the corner of a room to be used the next day. The customer was home every day and at times was trying to work along side of our employees as he wanted to help. We do not encourage this as we have a strict policy with our employees to try and proceed as planned to finish the work.
During the interior work we were contracted to do, Mr. Tremont kept adding more work not quoted on the original bid. Usually our policy it to write up another proposal for added work to be done at another specified date, but as he was expecting a baby soon our supervisor wanted to grant his requests. We proceeded to accommodate him and some of the added work was done free and the rest was quoted at a price to him, as he was adding, which was acceptable to him.
As Mr. Tremont was expecting his wife and baby home in the next day he did not want us to proceed to do the punch list as stated above even at a later date which we would have gladly accommodated him on. Both parties agreed on deducting the cost of some things on the punch list from the balance of the job and a final check was given to our company. It is unfortunate that this was not resolved as this is a family owned business and we strive to satisfy all our customers' requests and so far we have been able to accomplish this.
