The founder of Seneca Tree Company, Thomas Bissig, Senior (Sr), was originally employed by PSE&G and was an expert at climbing telephone poles. As an act of community service, Tom (Sr.) would help his neighbors and friends within the small community of Indian Lake, NJ by applying his acquired climbing skills to cut branches, remove limbs and take down entire trees. In 1974, Tom picked up his roots (pun intended) and started his own tree service company – Seneca Tree Service – which was named for the street where he resided in Denville, NJ – Seneca Trail. On his son’s 12th birthday, Tom brought his son, Tommy (Jr.) into the family business with a true ‘coming of age’ task – clearing brush! “I remember it was my 12th birthday and my father said, “Get in the truck, we have work to do!” Since then, it’s been a life-long “up-tree climb” career for Tommy. After his dad’s passing, Tommy took over his father’s business and used the profits to purchase more equipment. As the business grew, so did the need for a larger crew, so Tommy then turned to his friend, Fred Breem, for assistance. In 1995, Tommy and Fred became business partners and established Seneca Tree Service, Incorporated.
