Barry Fox Associates

Barry Fox Associates Architects concentrates on restoration of historic residences, and “fine new homes constructed within a context of historic regional architecture.” In other words, a Barry Fox building is either an old building resurrected for modern use or a new structure that resembles and resonates the look of the gracious old. Since the start of his practice in 1977 the overwhelming majority of Barry Fox commissions have been residences, the plurality of them in Louisiana, and many of those in New Orleans’ Garden District and The Vieux Carre (French Quarter). Farther afield, he built and renovated properties in Pass Christian, the New Orleans exurb on Mississippi’s Gulf coast and in the state capital, Baton Rouge. Beyond the Louisiana orbit, he has worked in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Massachusetts. In Jacksonville, Florida, he built the Bryan, Anderson and Ottenstroer homes among others. Off the New England coast he renovated a second home compound on Martha’s Vineyard for a large family. Among his notable renovations and restorations are the resurrected Rosebank Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, the “adaptive reuse” of nineteenth-century buildings in New Orleans’ Warehouse District, and the restoration of the Derbigny Plantation at Nine Mile Point. He revived the Dr. Virginia Kock home on St. Charles Avenue and the 1840’s Grinnen Reily House, the original work of the noted 19th century New Orleans architect Henry Howard.
