***** Update Below *****
While we are still awaiting something other than phone conversations with the woman answering the phone, the following is our review of their installation.
Most if not all granite installers have selections that are 90% the same as the rest, I suspect this is simply a matter of the number of quarries currently mining granite. So what you pay for is quality and professionalism and at present we are far less than pleased with both.
After paying a deposit for our slab to be moved from their supplier to their facility we had issues with our cabinet delivery (freight damage) and had to delay the measuring and installation a couple of times for a total of 3-4 weeks. Once the time to measure arrived they were great in dealing with a compressed timeline and offered us an appointment to measure roughly 1 week out and an installation date just a few working days later.
The day the installers came to measure they asked us for the sink and I pointed out that it was a drop in not an under-mount and they at first tried to convince me otherwise. I provided them with the instructions and mounting hardware and they accepted that I was accurate. They took the sink, said they would not need the clips nor the instructions and left. The installers initially told us there would need to be a seam as there was no way to fit the longest counter in the door, approximately 8' long. I cut a 2x6 I had removed from a prior soffit down to 8'4" and my wife and I checked to confirm it would clear the door and walls and make the corner without any issues, I suspect weight was their concern but a call to the company seemed to convince them that no seam was acceptable. The working day prior to the installation the scheduler called and asked why we wanted a drop-in sink and we explained that was what we had desired and selected, the scheduler told us that it wasn't what was "in" or "normal" for granite counters and we insisted. She said she would call if there were any issues.
Installation day comes and thankfully the long piece of the counter was in a single piece, their four installers and myself carried it up the stairs to the front door and inside without any major issues. Upon attempting to fit the sink in the hole the noticed the portion of the clips that were attached to the bottom of the sink didn't fit the hole (remember they had the sink for their use during their manufacturing of the counter) and proceeded first to try to bend the clips into submission. Once this didn't work the removed the sink, and using a grinder made notches for the clips. Regrettably they made these notches at angles (wider under the counter than at the counter) and continued to have issues getting the clips to fit. Eventually they managed to get 2 of the 8 clips installed and started caulking the sides, the reveal, of the sink. This resulted in a gap that goes from flush on one side (near the clip) to nearly 3/32nds of an inch on the other. When I called the office I was told that drop-in sinks weren't for granite, then told that the silicone caulking would hold the sink once it dried (though it had already begun to move). I sent them pictures of the sink, both above and below and waited almost 2 hours before calling them back (my cell was at the bottom of the email). The woman in the office proceeded to tell me that the installer told her the space between the sink and the cabinet wall was to small for the installers hands and that was why he failed to install the clips. When I pointed out that he managed to get 2 on, and not 2 on the same side, she became defensive and told me she would need to talk to them to determine what happened. I pointed out to her that she just told me the installer had told her the space was too small so talking to him again wasn't going to change his story and that I wanted a manager to contact me and come look at the end product.
I am as of this moment awaiting a response...
*********************************
After a couple of calls and a days the original installation team showed up at my home (must be their only team as I specifically requested anyone else come than the installers who blew it the first time). Upon initial arrival they started to install and tighten the replacement clips they had brought and started running new caulking along the edge of the sink. I pointed out to them that they would never get the sink to compress to the counter top unless they cleaned out the old dried silicone underneath it, they told me it was fine. Another call to the office and the manager called them, within a few minutes they were removing the sink to clean off the old silicone. A short while later they completed installing the clips, resealed the underside of the flange and departed. I am still not 100% pleased with the complete process but at least with all 8 clips installed I can remove and reinstall the sink at a later date should my attention to detail finally get the better of me.
