We create beautiful night skies... Indoors. Night Sky Murals started out as a desire to create (only for myself) a night sky, like the one I'd grown up sleeping under in the redwoods of Central California on summer camping trips. After years of trial and error, the night skies I painted actually started looking good. Friends saw the night sky and wanted one too. Then their friends saw theirs and wanted one. After drowning in paperwork of the mortgage industry that I found myself in... and wanting desperately to get out, I decided that if as many people as it seemed loved the night sky as I did.... then maybe there was a market for what I was starting to perfect.
So, I started Night Sky Murals.
Night Sky Murals is NOT plastic stars. It is not cartoonish looking, with large planets and galaxies. What I do is recreate, as closely as possible, the look and feel of a real night sky like you would see high up in the mountains on a moonless night, or possibly far out at sea on a cruise ship.
I use a special mixture of glow paint to paint the stars that are virtually invisible (in the light) on ceilings that are painted with light colors, and are somewhat visible (in the light) on darker colors. But, in the dark... the mural comes to life and, when the room is really dark, you aren't looking at a ceiling with glow paint on it... you are looking at a real night sky (at least that's what I've been told).
I am also told constantly that the 3D effect is amazing and that the stars actually twinkle. When asked how I get them to do that... I just say it's a trade secret. when in actuality it is probably more of a combination of the glow paint doing what it does and the person's eyes (rods and cones in the eyes) doing what they do.
So... to summarize, we take plane, ordinary ceilings and use them as a canvas for our night skies. On a light colored ceiling you usually can't even detect the murals when the lights are on. In the dark, you will swear that your ceiling has been removed and you are looking out into space from some dark location on the planet.
