It is a privilege to step inside the studio each day to draw and paint. The subjects of my work are the water and trees in nature and the beauty of the people in my world. As an artist, I feel connected to earlier generations of artists who grappled with the same immense task of capturing the human experience and the joy of life with simple brushes and canvas and paint. Working with a strong background in drawing, I incorporate the traditions and processes of the Old Masters, blending direct observation with visual memory, and creating luminous paintings for a contemporary world. My working process relies on direct experience of the subject (landscape, model or still life); life sketches and painted studies serve as useful tools for resolving ideas in the studio. The subjects that appeal to me are small, intimate scenes that often go unnoticed; complete in them selves, yet open to the viewer’s imagination. I am drawn to the transition times of day, the soft diffused light of dawn and the lingering shadows of twilight, the place in our minds between wakefulness and dreams.
