Murals and Trompe L’Oeil paintings can provide your home or business with a distinctive charm and personality, which can encapsulate your tastes and interests. Trompe l’oeil is a French expression, which directly translates as 'trick the eye'. They are a painted illusion, a visual joke which are intrinsically designed to deceive the viewer to believe that what they are seeing is real. Throughout my website, there are many examples of my murals, where you can see the diversity of my work. I have undertaken commissions for a wide range of clients, ranging from restaurants and hotels to private homes and children’s rooms. I also paint glow-in-the-dark star ceilings that create the illusion that the ceiling has been removed on a clear night. These effects are usually completed in one day - more details and prices can be found on my website. Additionally, I have had the fortune to showcase my mural painting on television including interior makeover programmes on BBC1 and ITV 1. I have also produced instructional books on trompe l'oeil painting - 'Trompe L'Oeil Interiors' 2002 and the 'Trompe L'Oeil Bible' 2003. Recently I have added three more books on step-by-step trompe l'oeil painting - 'Venetian Window' , 'Sun & Moon Mosaic' and 'Orange Tree'. These new books are published by Blue Macaw Publications and more details can be found in the 'projects' section in this site. Before undertaking each mural, I provide a no obligation consultation and preliminary sketches and designs. If you are happy with what you see, I will then supply a quotation for the prospective work. I am based in Essex and I can cover the areas of London and the home countries. Occasionally I will work further afield to cover the whole of the UK and abroad.

Chris was a true professional and had the patience of listening to my random endless ideas re painting my kitchen archway and he subtly suggested something that might be suitable to what I was looking for. The result was amazing- it’s the best feature in my new kitchen! A very talented and respectful artist.

Chris is kind, friendly and extremely talented. From enquiry through to completion of the starry night skies on our ceilings it was an easy process. As I had hoped, the starscape ceilings decompress my daughter after her daily interactions at school which can be somewhat overwhelming. The ceilings have calmed her.. And in that calming have increased our ability to communicate after a long day. We charge up the ceilings, move our giant beanbag out under the spiral nebula to get the best view of all of it.... and bask in the beauty. We connect. We share time and space, and to achieve this with a pre teen daughter is Huge! For the unique art and eternal pleasure we get from Chris's creation my daughter and I agree it is an actual bargain. Honestly, after 3 years of refurbishing my boathouse I think this is the best money I have spent! All guests given the luxury if having a 'look' sigh a deep, stress relieving sigh. It changes all of us that are lucky enough to experience it. I wholeheartedly and without hesitation recommend Chris for this work.

Chris created three works in our nursery: a pooh sticks vignette, based on the original E H Shepard illustrations, a Peter Pan silhouette with Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell and the boys against a background of the houses of Parliament with a glow in the dark night view and one of his stunning glow in the dark space ceilings. We approached Chris with some broad concepts, sent him a few images and descriptions over email. Chris mocked up ideas and took time to help us conceptualise what we wanted. He clearly advised us what would and wouldn't work and always had ideas and solutions. I really feel his expertise and experience helped us to settle on a clear achievable brief. Chris was in our house for three days completing the three pieces. He was an extremely low maintenance house guest who was diligently covid safe. He always work a mask and kept appropriate distance. He worked away in the nursery all day and we only really saw him coming and going each morning and evening. He left the nursery clean and tidy and was unfailingly polite and friendly. The completed work was of the highest standard and exceeded our expectations in all ways. The pooh sticks vignette is a true and faithful copy of the original and perfectly colourised. The glow in the dark vignette and ceiling are simply jaw dropping and have to be seen to be believed. The space ceiling feels three dimensional. As stunning as the photos are they don't do it justice. I do not believe you will find better than Chris. His talent, the highest quality of his work, his easy manner and expertise means you'd have to go a long way to find better. I only wish I had an excuse to rehire him.

I contacted Chris Westall to get my ceiling painted with one of his Cosmic and Star paintings after having seen his stunning job in a friend's house. The whole experience as a customer of Chris was fabulous. Starting with his fast and efficient email replies, his punctuality, and professionalism when the time to cover and protect the furniture in my bedroom. And this is only talking about practical matters, when it comes to art and results I can't be more happy. He did a brilliant piece of art which I enjoy every single night and has brought true beauty to my life in this light polluted city (London!). I might sound a bit mystical, but yes, I can say I travel across the universe whenever I want to. I totally recommend this Star Ceilings to anyone with the slightest interest in the stars. I would say it's perfect for kid's rooms but grown ups kids will be amazed as well.

Chris is 'Simply the Best ' .If you're in doubt of hiring him just take a look at his gallery of work . Perfection personified . He is polite, educated , well mannered and such a genuine person. He cares so much about getting the painting just the way you want it. He painted some clouds on my ceiling and what can I say , it's like looking at a museum in Venice ! I will use him again for future murals. He is probably one of the best in the whole country.

Chris turned up when he said he was going to, did a great job, cleared up after himself and the starry ceilings (we started with one, and had him come back and do a second one) were fab. We then asked him to create a custom mural for us, which he did (different to his usual stuff). It's a stunning mural, which I admire every day, and had many friends remark on it. It's not cheap, but I wouldn't expect it to be when the work is such a skilled craft.
