Mr. Ballard has over 45 years experience as an design architect. For the last 25 years, he has focused on very contemporary residential projects. He was named "Best Architect in Houston" by the Houston Press. His work is about evolving and reinventing residential design. He specializes in designing homes that have not been done before rather than redoing period designs which have been done better in the past. Mr. Ballard has been involved in architectural design and town planning with several prestigious firms including Ford, Powell, and Carson, 3D/International (Senior Designer), Richard Fitzgerald and Associates (Director of Design), and Architectural Services International (Vice President and Director of Architecture). Domestic projects include high-rise and mid-rise office buildings, bank buildings, hospitals, university buildings, and many residences. International projects include institutional and residential projects in Saudi Arabia, the 45 story World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as well as other office, hotel, and residential projects in Singapore, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. Mr. Ballard has won three major architectural design competitions, has been exhibited at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston (Visions and Revisions, 1982), at the Houston Art League (1994), at Lawndale Art Gallery (Sanpshots) and has served as juror and guest lecturer at the University of Texas, Texas A & M University, and Southwestern University. His designs have appeared in numerous publications, including Home, Texas Architect, Coastal Living, Fine Homebuilding, Cite, Profiles, Guide to Houston Architecture, Houston House and Home, etc. and many of his houses are featured on architectural design tours. He has authored two books on residential design, one of which was used as a textbook at various architectural schools.

Named "Best Architect in Houston" by the Houston Press Winner of many competitions Scott Ballard is a registered architect in the state of Texas and is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1970.

When we worked with Scott the first time, it was ~14 years ago, and I had phone screened 18 architects, sat down with the top 5, and then called a scad of references. What made Ballard stand out that first round is that *no-one* would say that he had any areas for improvement (I asked for strengths and areas that could have been better). He was the only one with that kind of rapport with all his clients. After going through the process with him the first time... come the next house, we re-hired him again for the second time - as the process really was... well, enjoyable! What came to pass, was an added benefit for both of my houses... Scott's assistance with the builder bidding process and his decades-long knowledge of all the builders in the area. Picking the right builder is the most important decision you can make... and Scott had rapport with so many of them, understood when builders were being vague (potentially hiding something) with the line items bids (which can NEVER be compared apples to apples) - and ultimately linked us up with two great builders. I don't know of many others who actually had a good, let alone great experience designing and building a home. For us, it all started with Scott..

My wife and I are extremely happy with Scott's work. He took our love of Mexican contemporary architecture, our desire for a house with those features and created a home that has beauty, joy and serenity. He is a great professional with a very creative mind. During the design process he was diligent and always budget conscious. He helped us to select Catama Builders as our contractor and stay involved in the construction process.The end product surpassed our expectations.

Scott worked with us to design our wonderful, contemporary home! Our living spaces are upstairs and the bedrooms are down. There is no wasted space. The living room has a 13' window wall and, being upstairs, looks out onto the treetops - almost like being in a treehouse. The great thing about Scott was that he listened to our ideas and then incorporated them into the drawings. Our home was on the Rice Design Alliance Home Tour several years ago. I would love to do another project with Scott.

Scott helped our family remodel a 70 year old house in West University and it turned out beautifully. He was open to our ideas and our vision and gave us valuable input with the design. Scott also designed a contemporary vacation home for us that was very unique and original. We have enjoyed our vacation house for many years. Scott is creative and fun to work with. A few years back, I bought an empty lot with plans to build a house on it. In the course of my diligence on the property, a knock on the house next door revealed my new future neighbor to be an architect, Scott Ballard, that was both a great person and proficient in the modern style that I was looking for. Having my architect living and working next door to the build site was a no brainer, and fortunately Scott was gracious with his time, which I believe significantly sped up the construction process as Scott was able to answer any question the contractor had as they framed out and built my place. Working with Scott was as smooth as it could have been. He was always prepared for our meetings, delivered everything on time, and clearly explained all the expenses up front. His experience in the industry was also invaluable as he did an excellent job of maximizing the use of space, considering shading and energy conservation, and providing me with a house that was exactly what I wanted. I can't recommend Scott highly enough and would definitely use him again for any architectural needs.

Scott has excellent ideas, is creative, responsive, and very budget conscious. Plus, he has no ego and only wants to do what pleases his customers most. Scott designed the remodel of our house and later designed the addition, and we could not have been more pleased with the end result of both projects. Scott is honest, hardworking, and practical, and I'd 100% recommend him without any reservation.

If you’ve lived in your home for a while and can still stop and enjoy it from certain angles, you probably had a good architect. We wanted to build a unique home that was well-designed, functional and within our budget and Scott did a great job. He worked collaboratively with us and was responsive and creative. We would use Scott if we build again.

We discovered several of Scott Ballard's splendid modern architectural works on Colquitt Street which is a few streets south of our lot and in turn discovered him. We were searching for an architect who could incorporate our ideas into a simple and functioning design which would require low maintenance . We envisioned a small but airy double height living space incorporating the kitchen . A ground floor master bed as well as at least 2 additional bedrooms all of the same size were desirable and we really wanted large windows to bring in the light. All of the above needed to be under 2300 sq feet and be designed and built in 10 months. Our dream project was realized under the keen and experienced architectural eye of Mr. Ballard ; a commendable feat indeed. He is a architect of rare talent and we highly recommended him . Our home is a testimonial to his exceptional skill.

Scott designed our house that was built in 2008. Before working with Scott we had renovated or built 6 houses so we had some experience in the process. Scott was highly recommended by neighbors whose home was designed by him. Nevertheless, to be sure we interviewed around 5 architects. He was the only one that “clicked” for us. The whole process was great and easy. He brought his unique style to the design but was also respectful of our ideas. My wife and I had differing views of what we wanted and Scot was instrumental in helping us arrive at a consensus. He then helped us find a builder. Throughout the building phase Scott was on hand to check the on its progress and handle any design modifications that were needed. Today, we are still happy and proud of the design. Daily we see people slow down to take a look and often get nice comments from passer byes.

Scott is an extremely thoughtful, talented, and diligent architect. His cool, contemporary eye for design mixed with his understanding for how people like to live mean that he was able to design the house that is now undoubtedly my favorite place on earth. Throughout the process, Scott was attentive, listened to our desires for the property, and designed accordingly. He was also wonderful at working with our contractor, guiding us through the entire construction process every step of the way. Beyond just being functional and comfortable, the house Scott designed for us is at once an architectural statement as well as sensitive and responsive to its waterfront surroundings. I cannot recommend Scott highly enough.
