Richard Nilsson founded Nilsson Architects in 2001 and he has been working in the architectural design field since 1986. He is a professional architect licensed to practice in Massachusetts and New York states. His design practice serves clients primarily in Metropolitan Boston but also in Metropolitan New York and internationally. Richard received his professional degree from The School of Architecture at Syracuse University where he was awarded the Cutler Memorial Scholarship of design excellence, for study in Florence, Italy. He has worked at several of Boston's premier Architectural Firms and he was recruited to serve as a principal architect for SSH International of Kuwait where he completed a variety highly-regarded urban, hospitality, commercial and residential design works throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Nilsson Architects was established in 2001 to provide many services for select clients. The creative studio approach of Nilsson Architects allows us to create custom solutions, to provide a high level of service and to deliver quality. Our broad experience in the world of design, across many cultures, industry sectors with many project types qualifies Nilsson Architects to conduct successful teamwork on your project no matter the size or complexity and to deliver quality.

I hired Richard Nilsson / Nilsson Architects and we worked together for the major redesign of a property that became a top market home in Somerville, MA. Richard listened to our program for the house and his design helped us make a gem from the rough, to include a master suite with en-suite spa, three generous bedrooms, modern kitchen, contemporary living spaces, finished basement and attic spaces. As one design, “big idea,” Richard suggested orienting the kitchen and personal living spaces to address the back garden and to bring the garden into the house. Our team loved the suggestion and that idea, and several others helped our project make the most of the special features of our site and landscape. Additionally, Richard’s design made simple, beautiful spaces from the existing attic and basement spaces to really take advantage of all the possibilities of the property. Nilsson Architects made excellent construction documents for the project, we were able to permit and build the project directly and without delays. Richard even helped us to work through structural / framing issues on the project. Richard’s communication was excellent, we collaborated well and our teamwork produced a really fine home. Rick Nilsson and I worked on a large commercial project together that turned out great. As a result of our relationship that developed on the commercial project, I commissioned Rick to design an addition to a home I had built on the south shore. Rick put together a set of drawings that knocked the socks off our local inspector. As a result I had no issues with inspections. The level of detail helped me build the addition with some select subcontractors. No change orders were necessary since we simply built what was on the drawings. Needless to say the project came out great. Addition was 4 levels including a finished basement, 32 x 16 great room on level one with large windows and views of the pool, 2nd floor master with cathedral ceilings and master bathroom, Loft level above. Rick even included some suggestions to improve circulation in the existing home without any prompting from me. I would highly recommend Rick to design for you. Great projects are built on well thought out designs. I was very satisfied and you will be too.

Rick Nilsson / Nilsson Architects helped me to design a major renovation to my home in Wareham. I wanted to make my house more accommodating for my wife and young daughter. Rick Nilsson listened to my requirements and made an excellent design for us. He suggested some ideas that I would not have thought of myself and I was really happy with what we came up with together. As a construction superintendent and professional builder, I really appreciate the quality of the plans that Nilsson Architects made for me. The Architectural drawings that Nilsson Architects make are high quality with the details and information required for building permits and for clear contracts.

Nilsson Architects helped me to design major renovations to my two family home in Somerville. Richard Nilsson worked with me to create a "Universal design" for the base, two-level apartment with environments that are accessible to all people, regardless of age, disability or other factors. I am delighted with the accessible kitchen and bathrooms that we designed together, they are beautiful and perfectly useful. In the second apartment of my Somerville two-family house, Richard helped me to design a very attractive two-level urban-style home. Our design including a modern kitchen, dining and living spaces in a open, light-filled floor plan with home office and a study / guest bedroom spaces, three full bedrooms two bathrooms including a master suite with and en-suite spa and walk-in dressing room. Both of our apartment designs are delightful and I am very happy with the results of our collaboration with Nilsson Architects! I’ve re-hired Richard and Nilsson Architects twice now, we've worked together on three projects of different types. Richard has given me excellent, full-service including both concept design document and full, construction documents as required for my projects.
